What Do All These “Firsts” Mean for Your Child? • • • • • There will be a transition time for both you and your child Your child (and you) will need extra support and encouragement They will be very tired and hungry after school You may hear from them that school is too long, and too hard With all of these “firsts”, your child will need to become more responsible, independent, and a problem-solver. With all of these “Firsts”, How Can I Help My Child? Encourage your child to make good choices even when no one is looking Encourage them to take responsibility for their actions Help them practice following directions the first time they are given and multiple step directions Talk about what appropriate behavior in the classroom and on the playground look and sound like Help them learn how to tie their own shoes, and button and zip jackets/pants Practice copying words and sentences from a distance (in class they have to copy from the whiteboard) Help your child practice walking safely: eyes, nose, and toes facing forward keeping appropriate spacing (First Grade Goal – No Child Left Behind or running into a pole ) #1 Way to Help Your Child… Read!! Read!! Read!! What Makes First Grade Different from Kindergarten? They need to bring their own snack from home (no more snack baskets) Name on snacks (we have sticky fingers) Understand what is for snack vs. lunch Need a non-spill water bottle (water only) – marked with name Lunches need to be brought from home or purchase hot lunch (Easiest way is to put money on a lunch account through the school on the LCES website) • One teacher to 26-30 students • No parent guided centers most instruction is done whole group • Nightly homework – Blue folder returned daily • Bicycles need to be parked in the bike racks (HELMETS REQUIRED – IT’S THE LAW!) • Leave the classroom to use the bathroom (Appropriate behavior expected!) • Have different teachers for music, science and library • 100 minutes of P.E. each week Classroom Behaviors Behaviors at school might surface that are different than they were in Kindergarten. Larger class sizes One teacher to approximately 27 students Working with partners and independently Learn to be a self starter All classroom management styles will fall under the umbrella of the school’s behavior policy (Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible) Classroom Behaviors Continued… Something new this year! We rely heavily on our volunteers to help with a variety of tasks (ESPECIALLY STARBUCKS RUNS!) Each teacher will decide upon the specific days, times, needs and start dates. You will find out more information at Back to School Night. All volunteers must follow school requirements for volunteers (Must have a current TB test on file in the office. To work alone with the children and to go on field trips, you must also have a Live Scan also.) Check in/Sign in at the office at your scheduled start time. Wear a visitor badge at all times Sign out at the end of your volunteer shift. The office has a schedule. Drop Off and Pick Up • You are welcome to walk your children to the playground the first 2 days of school (Thursday and Friday) Be prepared – the first few days are confusing and overwhelming on the playground. We will be waiting for you with our signs. • Starting the first Monday (August 21st) – Please give hugs and kisses and say goodbye at the main gate under the Lincoln Crossing sign. Your child will walk to the playground, put down their backpack on their class line, choose to play one of the designated playground games or participate in the morning Colts Morning Friend Walk. Designed for safety and structure. • We will walk the students out at 2:30 the first 2 days of school. We will have signs indicating where we will be standing. For safety purposes parents/guardians must check in with the teacher before taking your child. • During these few days, set up a meeting place with your child. We will be dismissing them from behind the front gates beginning Monday, August 21st. • Children who attend STAR, will check - in at the cafeteria door after school. For the first 2 days of school, we will walk your child to their check–in spot and make sure they are checked in. Positive Communication • Teacher assignments will be posted on Friday, August 11th after 4:00 p.m. • We will have a Meet and Greet on Tuesday, August 15th from 3:45-4:15. This is a great time to introduce your child to their teacher and drop off any school supplies. This alleviates a lot of stress and anxiety for your child (and yourself). • Positive communication is essential to your child’s success in first grade. If you have a question, problem or concern, please come talk to us. We want to work with you to help resolve it as smoothly as we can. Things To Look Forward To!
