Atlantic High is offering two 4-day
sessions that will help you read and
complete your assignment. Meet in
Atlantic’s cafeteria each morning at 7:30
for a complimentary breakfast.
Session A:
Black and White by Paul Volponi
June 12-15 from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. in the
library.
Session B:
Burning Blue by Paul Griffin
June 19-22 from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. in the
library.
9th Grade
Summer Reading
2017-2018
All incoming freshman must read at
least one novel during the summer
break. Students will choose one of
the two novels listed inside. There
will be a mandatory assignment due
the first week of school that will count
for 10% of the first 9 weeks’ English
grade.
You may pick up a free copy of the
novel of your choice at Atlantic High
School on _________.

Required Assignment for all
students:
Annotating your novel
You will need your own copy of the book so you
can annotate as you read. (Annotate: v. to
supply with critical or explanatory notes;
comment upon in notes) Annotating the text
means to mark it up to find meaning in the text.
You will color code the annotations based upon
the code below.

cover of your book. Leave space below the
chart to write.
Blue= family
Orange= social identity
Red= inner vs. outer beauty
Green= wealth or poverty
Purple= trust (or lack of trust)
Yellow= overcoming adversity
Black= friendship
