DEMAND-SIDE MANAGEMENT OF ENERGY USE IN MICRO, SMALL AND MEDIUM- SIZE ENTERPRISES (MSMES) IN UGANDA THROUGH PROMOTION OF WATER USE EFFICIENCY TECHNIQUES AND PRACTICES. Implemented by Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives (MTIC) in partnership with Uganda Cleaner Production Centre (UCPC) Title of the action Demand-side Management of Energy use in Micro and Small and Medium sized Enterprises (MSMEs) in Uganda through promotion of energy efficiency techniques and practices. Location(s) of the action; Uganda i.e.; Central region, Northern region and Western region and Eastern Region Name of the applicant Ministry of Trade, Industry and Co-operatives Partner Uganda Cleaner Production Centre (UCPC). UCPC is a Ugandan institution established in 2002 as NonProfit Organization Objectives of the Project To improve energy productivity and reduce adverse environmental impacts through adoption and implementation of energy efficient techniques and practices in MSMEs in the manufacturing sector. Specific objectives; • To create awareness about energy management and conservation among MSMEs. • To facilitate adoption and implementation of energy efficient techniques and practices in order to create model MSMEs for sustainable energy use in the sector Energy challenges of industries especially SMEs – Poor Operating Practices (Management planning, procurement, maintenance, training, housekeeping, record keeping etc) – Use of obsolete technologies – Poor Technical status of equipment – Poor Choice of Technology – Inefficient Process control – Lack of information, knowledge and skills – Behavior/Lifestyles Firewood yard before CP Waste in form of Steam leaks 6 Firewood yard after CP Steam Leakage Repaired after CP intervention UGANDA CLEANER PRODUCTION CENTRE 9 11 Wastage of hot water ►(energy? Impact of Project Implementation Activities to date (1) Kayonza Growers Tea Factory Ltd • Extended withering trough from 22m to 25.5m (length) to accommodate large amount of green leaf leading to reduced specific energy consumption. • Replaced six motors rated at 30hp with 25hp motors to reduce energy consumption. This resulted into USD 22,870 savings • Constructed wood shade, introduced use of wood backs and repaired leaking steam valves which resulted into annual savings of USD 35,014 • Installed solar panels in labor camps 15 (3) Buhweju Tea Factory Ltd • Improved power factor to reduce power losses as reactive energy by procuring and installing a new capacitor bank of 600KVAR, this has improved power factor from 0.75 to 0.96. getting estimated annual savings of approximately USD 5,182 • Improved heat recovery system by recovering and reusing condensate to optimize use of lost heat • Technology Modification: Increase number of PVC rollers on sorting line to trap fibers in made tea resulting in improved quality and productivity. 16 Name of companies Conservation and Energy Efficient Benefits Measures Mpanga Growers Tea Factory Buzirasagama Tea Factory Ltd Repaired the power back up system The factory has eliminated tea that could (diesel generator) to reduce waste be lost during load shedding. It was generated during load shedding estimated that 3 tone tea could be lost for a 24 hours load shedding. Estimated savings USD 52,200 The company serviced the Capacitor bank leading to power factor improvement from 0,85 to 0.98 Installed translucent sheets to take advantage of day light Replaced 25Hp motors that were rewound more than once This resulted into an annual saving of USD 6526.6 from 665.7 M3 of wood saved. This consequently resulted into reduction in Greenhouse gas by 491286.6 kgCO2eq GBK Dairy Products Ltd Upgraded the steam system by repairing Improved thermal efficiency which reduced leaks and insulation of all un-lagged steam and improved fuel utilization leading to pipes to eliminate heat loss and steam cost savings leaks Pearl Dairy Ltd The company is gradually switching from Reduction in emission of Greenhouse Gas use of fossil fuels to bio-mass by emissions from combustion of fossil fuels 17 installation of bio-mass fueled boiler Name of Enterprise Conservation and Energy Efficient Measures Benefits Bwendero Dairy Farm Installing a digester to convert waste water in bio-gas that will be used as fuel to generate steam Aloesha Organic Natural Health Products Ltd Installed efficient institution stove to reduce energy losses Constructed a fire wood shade to ensure proper fire wood seasoning Replaced high energy consuming bulbs with LED Bulbs Compliance with national waste water standards Annual saving of USD 136,285.71 Reduction GHG 85,374 tons CO2 eq 81,000 Cubic meters of tree saved annually Reduced time for boiling, The company has so far earned a National Drug Authority Certificate Firewood consumption reduced by 50% annually due improved combustion efficiency with use of institution stoves 18 Turning environmental challenges in business opportunity case at Bwendero Dairy Farm Residue from distillation process Digester to convert residue into bio-gas for generating thermal energy 19 Aloesha Organic Natural Health Products Ltd Before After 20 Technology change at Lakeside Dairy Ltd Old high energy consuming sterilizing machines New energy efficient sterilizer machines 21 Economic growth & devt!
