In Memoriam
Our Port family mourns the loss of
former Port Director of Operations
and Interim Executive Director John
Hachey. Our deepest sympathies are
with his wife, Rachel, their sons and
family, and their many friends.
Alley Cat Antiques owner Lea Mayberry (above) has integrated that business with the
iconic Marine Supply & Hardware store at 202 Commercial Avenue.
Historic chandlery remains open
A
fter purchasing a city block that includes the 104-year-old Marine Supply & Hardware, the Port of Anacortes
recently helped to negotiate a transaction that will see owners Roy and Lea
Mayberry retain the chandlery and add an
adjoining antiques business.
“The Port encouraged us because they
want to see the chandlery remain,” said
Mayberry, a long-time downtown business owner. “Like many who know the
chandlery, we want this to continue to be
a destination not just for local customers
but for tourists.”
The chandlery, founded and operated
by the Demopoulos family, has been an
Anacortes fixture since 1913. The Port
purchased the property in 2014, then
leased the building back to Steve Demopoulos. The Mayberrys purchased the
www.portofanacortes.com business from Demopoulos and leased the
building from the Port this year.
Mayberry said they have researched
the history of Marine Supply & Hardware
to retain the character of the business.
She also considers the retention of staff
as a critical component of preserving the
chandlery.
“Their 85-plus years of knowledge is
invaluable, and not just about inventory.
They know many of the customers by
name,” she said.
Since the Mayberrys purchased the
business they discovered that they carried
many of the same vintage look nautical
gifts.
Today when you visit Marine Supply
& Hardware, you will find a mix of inventory including chandlery items, antiques
