Nitrogen is an essential ingredient in
proteins, DNA, and RNA that build our
bodies and is an essential nutrient for
plant growth.
2. Nitrification – nitrifying bacteria in the soil
convert ammonia into nitrites and nitrates
(NO2-, NO3-)
3. Denitrification– nitrates are converted
back into nitrogen gas (N2), which returns to
the atmosphere
4. Decomposition – nitrogen containing
compounds can be converted by bacteria
back into ammonia
