Student Conduct Leadership Packet
The Office of Student Conduct and the Mediation and Advocacy program have several
leadership opportunities available for students with good communicative and interpersonal
skills; decision making abilities and academic record. Involvement in these positions will
assist students in better developing their leadership skills, gaining a deeper understanding of
what it means to be men and women for others and will provide the student with the
opportunity to effect positive changes in the lives of their peers.

Criterion




Must be free from any serious disciplinary action.
Must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or better.
Must be a current full-time student at Saint Louis University.
Must be able to maintain Confidentiality
Application


Complete the following Application and submit it to the Office of Student Conduct by
5p.m. March 31, 2010. Please be certain to indicate for which position you are applying.
Only type written application materials will be accepted.
Answer the General Leadership and job-specific application questions on a separate
sheet of paper. Please do not submit more than a total of 3 pages for your responses
and again, please be certain that your answers are type written with 12 pt. font and 1 inch
margins.
Interviews

Interviews will be conducted during the week of April 12th.

Student Conduct Board
Position Description
The Student Conduct Board provides an opportunity for students to be involved in the resolution of
student behavioral issues that impact the community in which they live. The Board provides both an
appropriate means of resolution and an opportunity for personal growth for students who have
violated University policy and student Board members.
General Description

Honor the Code of Conduct and educate our students about the rights and responsibilities that
it guarantees.
Uphold the mission and values of our University Community by consistently and
compassionately resolving policy violations.
Foster community values and objectives by encouraging positive decision making and selfrespect in our students.
Model the lessons we hope to teach our students by demonstrating fairness, empathy and
respect in our application of policies and procedures.
Value and teach the importance of consequences and challenges in the growth and
development of our students.




Duties







Attend training sessions, meetings, and hearings of the Student Conduct Board.
Be familiar with the Student Conduct Board operating procedures, Code of Conduct,
University regulations and policies, and educational resources available to students.
Participate in Student Conduct Board hearings by:
o Questioning participants to determine what occurred, who is responsible, and the
response of the University community
o Openly listening to all information presented
o Displaying the ability to view the information present through the various
perspectives of the participants
o Displaying the ability to work within a group to discuss information presented
o Displaying good judgment and decision-making skills in determining whether a
violation has occurred and an appropriate sanction if necessary.
Maintain strict confidentiality regarding all details of Student Conduct Board hearings.
Exhibit behavior appropriate as a role model for other students and strive to preserve both
the rights and responsibilities of students.
Members will plan and implement educational programs, both active and passive to educate
students and to offer alternative events.
Members will be available to U101 instructors and classes, to Residents Advisors and the
Commuter Student Association, and other organizations, such as SGA as needed as a
resource regarding Student Conduct policies and procedures.
Qualifications





Must be free from any serious disciplinary action.
Must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or better.
Must be a current full-time student at Saint Louis University.
Must be willing to sit on 1-2 hearings per week
Must be an active participant in other SCB educational programs and sponsored events.

Student Advocate
Position Description
The Student Advocate assists a charged student in adequately preparing for the hearing, explains the
hearing procedures, and acts as moral support to assure that the integrity of the process is upheld
and that each student has a fair hearing. The Student Advocate is expected to meet with the charged
student at least once, and to be available to the charged student to answer questions about the
hearing process. While Student Advocates attend the hearing with the charged student, the
Advocate is there in a silent, advisory role. The Advocate does not speak on behalf of the charged
student, but is available to support the charged student through the hearing.

 Model the lessons we hope to teach our students by helping the charged students to see the
reasons and values inherent in the policies which they may have violated.
 Guide students to develop advocacy skills by assisting in the preparation of an impact
statement, questions for witnesses, and a closing statement. If the charged student wishes to
appeal the decision of the hearing officer(s), the Advocate will also be available to guide the
student through the preparation of an appeal.
Duties
1. Check email diligently and respond to the Advocates’ Advisor when requests for an Advocate
are made.
2. Assist students who have been charged with violating University policy by:
 Being available to discuss the hearing process with charged parties.
 Helping students charged with violating policies to prepare for hearings with the
University Committee on Student Conduct, Student Conduct Board, or administrative
hearings, including the preparation of an impact statement, questions for witnesses, and
a closing statement.
 Attending hearings with students as advisors.
 Assisting students with writing letters of appeal.
3. Attend training sessions, meetings, and hearings as determined necessary by the Student
Conduct Officers.
4. Be familiar with the Student Conduct Board operating procedures, Code of Non-Academic
Student Discipline and Responsibility, University regulations and policies, and educational
resources available to students.
5. Maintain strict confidentiality regarding all details of the cases on which the Advocate works.
6. Exhibit behavior appropriate as a role model for other students and strive to preserve both the
rights and responsibilities of residence hall students.
7. Participate in other duties related to the Student Advocate program.
