THE PRAYERS AND BEST WISHES OF ALL MEMBERS IS EXTENDED TO PP LEO
MARTELL ON THE PASSING OF HIS WIFE CLAIRE. CLAIRE DIED ON JANUARY 19 AFTER
SUFFERING A HEART ATTACK. CLAIRE WAS A SMILING PRESENCE AT ROTARY
EVENTS. ONE OF THE GREAT PHOTOS IN THE FILES OF CAMBRIDGE ROTARY IS A
1991 PHOTO OF LEO & CLAIRE DANCING AT THE MEXICAN FIESTA DISTRICT
CONFERENCE DURING LEO’S YEAR AS DISTRICT GOVERNOR. THAT WAS ONE GREAT
CONFERENCE AND MANY ROTARIANS WELL REMEMBER THE GREAT FIESTA.
CLAIRE WAS A GREAT LADY WHO WILL BE MISSED BY LEO, HER CHILDREN, GRAND
CHILDREN, GREAT GRANDCHILDREN AND ALL OF US IN ROTARY.
ROTARY THIS WEEK – JANUARY 25
Linda Robinson McKenzie will present a video and overview of her visit to the Kimuri Children’s
Center in Kenya. Our Rotary Club is joining with a number of other clubs, District 7930 and
Rotary International in a project that will purchase a bus for the center. This is an exciting project
that has been brought to our attention by JANET McWALTER and MICHAEL SIMON. Past
District Governor Ralph Hammond will accompany Linda and provide the support for the audiovisual equipment.
Linda was born and raised in New York City. Married with two children she worked for the First
National Bank and completed her M.B.A. She also worked for the Greater Roxbury Development
Corporation.
Linda worked for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in the Department of Social Services for
over 9 years and since 1997, I have managed and operated a small family business. We provide
Human Resources services for companies that wish to out-source this component of their
business.

PROGRAM
Jeff Stein AIA, a riding and social friend of MALLORY SLATE spoke on “Architecture and
Motorcycles for Rotarians. Jeff is the director of the architecture program at the Boston
Architectural Center and is the architecture critic for Banker and Tradesman.
Jeff showed how motorcycles have a major impact on our lives. In fact, based on noted scholars
like LeCorbusier, Plato, Gregory Bateson and Blaise Pascal it should be evident to everyone that
motorcycles help us develop “an intimacy – with a more spacious, less tangible aspect of nature.”
Since “all man’s unhappiness stems from a single cause: his inability to remain quietly in a room”
we need to hop on a motorcycle and enjoy life and be happy.
Following Jeff’s presentation and related questions from Rotarians your editor was informed that
members PRESIDENT DENISE, TOM LYNN, SARAH GALLOP, RUSTY CANN and HELEN
MOULTON were so impressed with the idea of riding “free” on a BMW cycle that they signed up
to take lessons from MALLORY.
Jeff Stein is discovered checking to see if Mallory has a permit to operate his Beamer.
See you at RYLES on Thursday.
