Animals at War
By Andrew Henry
The Horse
In World War 1 horses were important
animals to have on the front line. Horses
were used for the Calvary where they
would charge in to enemy camps. They
were also responsible for carrying supplies,
guns and ambulance carts which carried
the dying and wounded. Horses were very
precious animals to have. Only the
strongest horses could survive the war.
The Canary
The canary was a real life-saver. When
Chlorine and Mustard gas were being used
in the First World War it was up to the
canaries to detect them. It is a fact that
a canary’s senses of detecting
gas are 15 times stronger than a human.

The Leprosy Mission
By Alana Keery
On Wednesday 18th January, Sam Smith, who works for ‘The
Leprosy Mission’, came in to our school to raise pupils’
awareness on the interesting topic of leprosy. It was an eye
opener to many people who didn’t know much about leprosy
and the facts.
The Leprosy Mission are an international Christian
development organization, they focus specifically on leprosy
and offer specialist expertise on reconstructive surgery.
They address the fear and stigma associated with having
leprosy. Leprosy or Hansen's disease (HD) is a chronic disease
caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium leprae and
Mycobacterium lepromatosis. Leprosy can be found in 30
countries across Africa, South Asia and East Asia.
Approximately 6,000,000 people worldwide are affected by
leprosy and its effects on the eyes, muscles, bones, skin and
tissues.
Here are the Top 10 Facts about Leprosy:
Leprosy has affected mankind for over 4,000 years
Ireland is not affected by the disease
India has the most cases of leprosy in the world
Leprosy is one of the oldest recorded diseases
Approximately 94% of people are naturally immune
The first signs of leprosy are numb patches on the skin which look a slightly different
colour from the person's normal skin tone.
A person with leprosy is known as a ‘Leper’
Leprosy is curable - taking tablets for 6 months can usually cure you
Leprosy day is on the 29th January
Every two minutes somebody is diagnosed with leprosy
Leprosy is not contagious
The Leprosy Mission is amazing! It helps so many people a year. Many people have realized
now, that there is a cure for leprosy and you can get through it, but that is only if it is
caught early. The leprosy mission is ensuring that that happens and people get help in time.
Let’s hope they keep on doing the great work that they do, so many people can now live life
leprosy free!

The World
According to Oliver
By Oliver Wilson
Dear Readers,
I am writing to you for the second time. So guess what that means? I haven’t been made
redundant! This is a clear sign that people do actually read this. I am very impressed,
although the number of readers has not been revealed; I’m guessing it’s up in the hundreds.
Let’s get on with it.
David Cameron and his party (the Conservatives) have put an NHS reform bill forward and it
is being discussed in the Houses of Parliament. One of the things that the Health and Social
Care Bill would do is charge patients for their health care. Many people are against this as a
whole; however, I think that it is quite a good idea. If you go to a hospital on a Friday night
and look around many of the wards, you will notice something. You will notice that most of
the people are there due to drinking too much alcohol. As a result of that, they have
injured themselves and possibly others too. Are the people who are against this seriously
going to say that these people shouldn’t receive a bill for their medical treatment? It is
their own fault that they are in hospital, not anyone else’s. The tax payers shouldn’t have
to pay for it, the people who put themselves there in the first place should. I do believe,
however, that people who have been hospitalised due to someone else should have their
medical fees paid by the person who was responsible for putting them there.
We are now moving oversees towards America; let’s have a look at their politics. The three
main Republican presidential contenders Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich are
battling it out for the right to challenge Barack Obama in the November presidential
elections. Politics in the US are very different to politics in the UK. For a start, there are
two parties, the Republicans and the Democrats. The party that is not in power (which is
the Republicans at the moment) constantly bickers about who should become the next
presidential candidate. They don’t know how to come together as a team and nominate one
person, all they know is how to argue amongst them.
That is it for another month; I hope you are ready and waiting for the April edition.

Haiku Poems
By Katie Johnston
Haiku is a simple and direct form of traditional of Japanese poetry.
A haiku is normally from a point of nature such as water, fire,
weather or an animal. The Japanese enjoy these poems as they
are short and easy to understand!
For Example:
Pineapple in the Sea
Pineapple floating?
I found it in the blue sea,
I think I’m dreaming…
The Sea
In the blue I stared,
I was staring at the sea,
I feel much better.
The Man with The Swan?!
In the park we looked,
At the man with his white swan;
We wonder, we stare…

Movie
War Horse
Dylan Noble & Ross Kinley
Warhorse was quite a good film but not my cup of tea. It starts off with the birth of Joey
(the horse) and shows him being bought by the father of Albert who raises and trains the
horse. Joey ends up being sold as an army horse to pay the rent and in a surprise attack
by the Germans. The English lost the attack but Joey survived and was then used as a
German horse. Two German boys stole him from their army and hid him and another
horse in a nearby windmill. The two boys were discovered and shot but the horses were
not found. A girl who lives on the farm where the windmill was located found the horses
and tried to train them on her own.
The German soldiers who kept coming and taking food supplies from their farm found and
retook the horses to the army. The horses end up back in the war and are used to pull
the missile launchers up the hills. Joey runs away and almost gets killed by a tank but
swiftly jumps over the tank and runs for dear life. He runs through loads of barbed fences
and eventually gets so caught up in the barbed wire that he falls to the ground. Both
English and German sides see the horse and one soldier from each side goes to free him
from the bonds. The horse is freed and is returned to Albert. An emotional story but not
really my kind of film.

Movie
Jack & Jill
Dylan Noble
Jack and Jill is a good film. It begins with the introduction of Jack, who is played by
Adam Sandler. He has a good, well-paid job and also a family. It is then revealed that he
dreads Thanksgiving every year because of his weird, psychopathic sister - Jill. Jill comes
over for Thanksgiving every year and gets up to lots of weird activities. The role of Jill is
also played by Adam Sandler, though obviously, he is not in his normal appearance but in
the dresses and outfits of a woman. Overall I would rate the movie 4 stars and would
recommend it strongly.

Movie
War Horse
Rachel Cairns
War Horse is about a horse called Joey who is bought at auction by a drunk farmer, Ted
and brought home to plough the fields. But Joey looks weak and no one believes he can do
it, so the farm will be taken from them. But his son, Albert is determined Joey can do it.
He ploughs the field but when the crops fail, Ted has no choice but to sell Joey to the
army, as World War One has begun.
Joey goes through lots on the battlefield. His first rider is shot so he is captured and works
for the Germans. Then a little girl, Emily finds Joey and the other black horse he is with.
When the Germans find out her and her grandpa are keeping them, they take them back to
pull the cannons. Then a huge storm erupts which Joey must run from. He is caught in the
wire and is brought back to the British side where he finally reunites Albert who joined the
army a few years before.
I thought this was a great film! It was very sad at some points but also funny at times. It
was adventurous, exciting and for people with open hearts. Definitely deserves five stars.
