Labs will be used throughout the course to give students hands on experience and a better understanding of certain topics. Some of the topics that will be presented are: 1. Atomic Theory 2. Stoichiometry 3. Thermochemistry 4. The Gas Laws 5. Electronic Structure of Atoms 6. Covalent Bonding 7. Ionic Bonding 8. Solutions 9. Equilibrium 10. Acids and Bases 11.Energy and Spontaneity 12. Reduction and Oxidation 13. Nuclear Chemistry By learning the thought process of a scientist, students will enhance their problem solving skills. At the end of this course, students will be able to use their problemsolving skills in all aspects of life, and in many professions. For those interested in studying chemistry at the college level, will be prepared to do so by completing and performing well on the homework assignments, quizzes, lab work, and exams. TEXTBOOK: Chemistry, (Addison-Wesley) 2002 REQUIRED MATERIALS: •3 Ring Binder or Notebook —The notebook should contain homework, lecture notes, lab work, and extra paper. Dividers should be used to better organize class materials. •Pen (blue or black ink only) —All labs will be done in pen because when conducting an experiment, nothing should be erased. Unwanted items should be crossed out with one line through them. When conducting experiments, the so-called unwanted information may be useful later on. •#2 Pencil & Eraser —Pencil should be used on homework assignments because when performing calculations, there may be a lot of erasing to do! A #2 pencil will be needed for exams on Scantron. •Scientific Calculator —Calculators will be needed to assist you on homework, labs, exams, and other class activities. A graphing calculator is not necessary for this class. •Notebook Paper —Notebook paper is needed for lecture notes, homework assignments, and other class activities. •Lab Notebook —A quadrille lab notebook will be needed to record all lab activities. This will prepare you for college-level lab reports. •Ruler —To make straight lines in your lab notebook!! •Textbook —All students should have a textbook to complete homework assignments and to study. CLASSROOM PROCEDURES: 1. Absence: •It is the STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY to make -up any missed work. Missed tests and quizzes must be made up on the next day following the last day of absence. •Assignments are due the day of the chapter exam. This will allow for easier homework makeup when absent. •Labs may be made-up if the equipment is out or available. If the equipment is not out or available an alternative assignment will be given. •If you are absent, please call a classmate or refer to my website for assignments. 2. Late Homework Policy: •Late work is ONLY accepted the day after the original due date. NO EXCEPTIONS. •If work is late due to absence, 100% credit is given. •If work is not late due to absence, 70% credit will be given. 3. Attendance &Tardy Policies: •The attendance and tardy policies stated in your Student Handbook will be followed. •You are counted tardy if you are not through the door when the bell rings. 4. Heading of Papers: •The top sheet used MUST have the following heading: Name Date Due Period Please write this legibly in the upper right hand corner. On the first printed line, put the title of the assignment or the pages from the text used . You may write on both sides of the paper. For all assignments, all pages need to be stapled together. •If you are absent, staple an absent slip to the top of the paper. 5. Picking Up/Turning in Handouts Pick up PPT. notes/ hw packets and any type of work and labs at the beginning of each class period from the bins. Turn in work to appropriate period bins and find absent work/ noname work in proper bins. 6. Notecards Notecards will be used to call on students at random. CLASSROOM RULES: 1.Students caught cheating on any assignment or tests will receive zero points. If you let someone copy your homework, lab, quiz, test, etc., both parties will receive zero points. 2.Respect the instructor, other classmates, and school property. 3. If you bring food make sure you clean it up/throw it away. 4.Personal grooming (i.e. applying make up, brushing hair, etc.) is to be completed at home, during break, or between classes. Phones or Headphones: There will be a “Cell Phone light” when the light is green you are good to be on your cell phones for school related work only. When the light is red cell phones should not be visible at all. They will be taken and placed in the cell phone “jail” during this time. If the light is blue iPods can be used only. Consequences: 1.Student-teacher conference to remedy the problem. 2.Call home to parent/ guardian, and set up a meeting if necessary. 3.Refer to the office for appropriate discipline. EXPECTATIONS: 1. All students are expected to be in class on time and be prepared to work. Time is limited each class period, and in order to cover all of the material and complete all lab work, students must be on time and ready to work with the required materials. 2. Class rules must be obeyed at all times. Every student has the right to learn, and class rules must be followed to ensure everyone is able to learn science in a positive learning environment. 3. Assignments (homework and labs) must be organized and handwriting must be legible. This is important because I must be able to read your work in order to give you the proper credit that you deserve. So what does legible handwriting have to do with science and the real world? For example, if there are two people who are trying to patent the same idea at the same time, who receives the patent? According the U.S. patent laws, the person who came up with the idea first, has the patent rights. That means, the very first person who has documented his / her idea in a notebook that is comprehensible. 4. Students are responsible for any missing work due to absence. Every assignment is important because it leads to the next topic being covered. Students cannot afford to fall behind, and must be responsible for making up any missed work. GRADING CRITERIA: Students must take responsibility for learning the material and responsibility for earning their grade for this class. Grades will include a comprehensive final exam, tests, labs, quizzes, and homework. The percentages for each category are: Homework: 20% Quizzes & Tests: 45% Labs: 20% Final:15% A computer will calculate your weighted grade. Grades cannot be determined by just adding up points and dividing by the total. The following grade scale will be used: A = 90-100% C = 70-79 % F = 59 % and below B = 80-89 % D = 60-69 %
