The best way to bring native butterflies back to your garden,
school or local area is to create your own butterfly habitat!
Butterflies are beautiful and they play important roles, such as
pollination in the local ecosystem. Native plant species once common
in our landscapes have been lost, including important food plants for
caterpillars and adult butterflies. But you can help by putting some
back, and Trees For Life can help you get the plants you need!
How to get butterfly plants from Trees For Life:
We have options to place an order, buy individual plants from our nursery, or
grow your own butterfly plants in one of our Start From Seed Kits.
• Order through the Trees For Life Nursery. Choose from a wide variety
of suitable plants and have your butterfly plants professionally grown by
our Trees For Life nursery team. Orders are placed before November each year,
with plants ready in the following April. Minimum order 50 plants. Request the full
nursery catalogue at [email protected].
• Purchase at our Annual Plant Sale. Each year we sell a large variety of
native garden plants suitable for butterfly gardens. Trees For Life Members
can buy plants at a discounted price. Our annual Garden Plant Sale is usually
held in the last week of May, check our website for dates. Stock is typically available
through to September.
• Purchase a Start From Seed Kit, and grow your own seedlings. Trees For
Life can supply all the soil, seed, materials and instructions you need to grow
your own butterfly plants from seed. One kit grows up to 50 seedlings and
you can choose to grow up to two different species per kit. Kits are available all
year round, however species choice can be seasonal. Contact us for an order form.
More on growing your own butterfly plants from seed...
If you’d like to grow your own seedlings, there are some things you will need to
consider:
• Growing from seed often takes 3-6 months before they are ready to plant.
• Daily attention and watering (minimum 1-2 times each day) is required.
• Your plants need a sunny location with 8 hours of direct sunlight per day.
• A raised growing bench is required to keep pests away and allow good airflow
and drainage.
