The team showed steady improvement under head coach John Antulov last season and was in a battle for their first ever playoff spot as the season wound down. Unfortunately, the squad fell short. This year, the core of players Antulov has brought in over the last couple of years has some much valued experience battling against some of the top teams in the CIS (who play in the Canada West Pacific Division). Ryan Glanville (Williams Lake, BC) became the first TRU soccer player ever to earn a Canada West all-star honor. The veteran forward was a second team all-star after winding up tied for third in overall goals. He will certainly garner attention this season from the opposition along with Mitch Popadynetz (Nelson, BC). Popadynetz, Colton Walker (Sicamous, BC) and Finlay McPhie (Vernon, BC) are the team’s co captains this year. Walker will be a steady influence in the midfield while McPhie will anchor the back line. All three will be vital to the team’s success. Popadynetz spent this summer playing in the Premier Development League for the Victoria Highlanders in an effort to improve his overall game. It will be a tall task to replace graduated veterans like keeper Travis Froehlich (Revelstoke, BC), Corey Wallis (Enderby, BC), Oriol Torres (Barcelona, Spain) along with Braeden Burrows and Kyle Fertile (both Kamloops, BC). But Antulov expects fourth year midfielder Mike Harvey (Calgary, AB), third year midfielder Mike Bennett (Vernon, BC) along with sophomores Adam Swanson (North Vancouver, BC) and Olamide Adjibike (Maple Ridge, C) to contribute more as they see the field for longer stretches of time. The addition of Justin Donaldson (Kamloops, BC), who played two seasons at the University of Victoria will also go a long way in the leadership and depth department. Another key addition is Vicky Parhar (Surrey, BC), who played two years in the PACWEST for Kwantlen Polytechnic and most recently toiled for the Langley F.C. Hurricanes of the Vancouver Metro Soccer League. The WolfPack have three Europeans on their roster as Kahalifa Fanne (Tours, France) is joined by countryman Maxime Fieujean (Servas, France) and Belgium born Thomas Lantmeeters (Zulendaal, Belgium). Their other international player is Yuya Nakano (Aichi, Japan), who played this summer for the Pacific Coast Soccer League Kamloops Heat. The keeper’s spot is up for grabs with last year’s back up Clay Harsany (High River, BC) battling rookies Lubomir Magdolen (Kamloops, BC) and Brady VanRyswyk (Penticton, BC) for the starter’s job. Other first year recruits are: Kailum Nicolson (6’2”, centre back, Kamloops, BCValleyview Secondary/KYSA U-18), and Tomas Goddard (6’0” forward, Kamloops, BC- St Ann’s Academy/Kamloops Youth Soccer U-18). While the WolfPack are anxious about this season they are also building towards a strong team for 2017 when Thompson Rivers gets an automatic berth to the CIS Soccer Nationals as the host team.
