Please remember to remove ALL valuables from vehicles and report any suspicious behaviour to police. PLEASE remember to ask your guests and workmen to remove any valuables from their vehicles. ALWAYS call police on 999 if you see anyone looking into or about to break into vehicles on your street. REMEMBER that it only takes a few seconds for opportunistic car thieves to steal property left on view in vehicles. We have also had reports of cars being rummaged through and items taken without any damage to the vehicle. There are car thieves who use remote devices to jam the frequency of vehicles which can unlock the car. If you find that your vehicle has been tampered with and you know it was locked and secure when you left it, please let us know and report any stolen items on 101. BOGUS CALLERS There have been a few reported incidents of bogus callers operating on the ward over the last few months. They have particularly targeted elderly and vulnerable victims. An 82yr old lady was targeted in August and again in November after callers claiming to be workmen from the council conned their way into the premises and stole her cash. Bogus callers aim to enter your premises under false pretences to steal from you. Perpetrators may pose as builders, utility company personnel, door-to-door sales people, council staff or police officers. Always be wary of people who turn up at your door unannounced. REMEMBER Think before opening your door; are you expecting anyone? Use your spyhole and door chain to see if you recognise the caller. Ask the caller for proof of identity. Contact the company the caller claims to be representing using the number in the phone book. Never ring the number given by the caller. If you are in any doubt do not open the door. Ask the caller to return at a later date and arrange for a friend or neighbour to be present. You do not have to let anyone in your home. Utility companies will now offer a password identification system. Any caller from one these companies should be able to give you a pre-arranged password as additional proof of identity. Look on your bill and contact your supplier for further information in regards to setting up a pre-arranged password. If you are suspicious dial 999 immediately. BURGLARY CRIME PREVENTION Here are a few tips to keep the burglars away. Please remember to secure your windows and doors when you are not occupying a room. Remember to use a timer so your lights will switch on even when you’re out or have a radio playing during the daylight hours. Keep high value items away from windows, for example laptop computers on the dining room table. (Burglars are extremely opportunistic and will pounce on these goods straight away.) Double lock your front and rear doors when leaving your home. (Yale locks are relatively simple to slip for an experienced burglar. They will think twice if your door is double locked.) Take measures to make sash windows more secure. If you have sash windows please check to see if you have sash window locks. The locks can be fitted onto the upper sash about 100mm above the top of the lower sash to allow the windows to be opened a little way for some air without the worry of someone climbing in or two pairs can be fitted with the second pair fitted lower down to prevent any movement. (Traditional London housing with these types of windows are more appealing for burglars as they are easier to break in to.) If going away remember to ask a Neighbour or friend to check on your property and remove items such as excess post ( Burglars are opportunistic and will see stacked up mail as sign of non occupancy ) Remove all packing that advertises your goods e.g computer boxes. Keep car and house keys away from the front door inside your home. (A lot of burglaries are done through the burglar using ‘fishing rod’ style objects to poke through a letterbox so they can steal car keys and house keys. The majority of cars stolen in London are done through letterbox burglaries. Fit a letter box cowl to the rear of your letterbox to prevent burglars access. ) PHONE SCAMS There are still a number of Bogus Callers out there phoning or texting on a daily basis to scam victims out of their cash. I have put together a list of a few points to remember about these types of calls. These people will pretend to be staff from various different bank fraud units, or government departments, they will also pretend to be police officers calling from a particular police station. They will trick you by leaving the call open at their end so you believe you are calling your bank or police station. REMEMBER Your BANK or the POLICE will NEVER ask you for your bank account details over the phone. Your BANK or the POLICE will NEVER ask you to get an amount of cash (for various different reasons given by the criminal) from your account. Your BANK or the POLICE will NEVER tell you that they are sending a courier to collect your bank cards or cash. If you do not recognise the number just end the call without speaking to the persons. If you do end up speaking to one of these people, after you end the call please use a DIFFERENT phone to call your bank or alleged police station to clarify the callers story. This way the scammer cannot keep you on the phone line and con you out of your cash. If you are a victim of this crime please call police on 999.
