One of our NDAUK member Dr Angel Magar happened to be in Nepal
during the earthquake. He has kindly assessed the latest situation and sent
the following information:

“According to my analysis in the Kathmandu we need more support in terms of food,
shelter above all funding than the human resources as there is a high level steering
committee of Nepal Army, Ministry of Home and Ministry of Health who will coordinate
the support for the victims.
Dhading and Gorkha, both are worst hit districts along with Sindhupalchok. I went to
Sindhupalchok today (27 April) and witnessed the devastation. Victors are complaining
of lack of foods, water, sanitation and shelter at Sidhupalchok, similar stories are from
Dhading and Gorkha.
Government of Nepal is trying to manage all kind of funding and relief support through a
centralised system. Accordingly, Ministry of Health and Population has designated
coordinator for all 19 affected districts.
This morning, Ministry of Heath asked on of the tertiary care hospital if they would like
to accept 10 Ortho Surgeon from India. The Hospital denied MoH offer stating that they
have enough manpower to run OT. Later I found that they didn't have sufficient Oxygen
cylinders and OT rooms.
I just had a Ministry officials, any relief effort in health has to be coordinated
through Health emergency operation center at Ministry of Health and population, which
is operational 24 hours. (contact number: +977-1-4250845/842) Dr Khem Karki is the
International Coordinator.”
