MANUFACTURED GAS PLANT, EASTERN US
FORMER EAST COAST MANUFACTURED GAS PLANT
(MGP) SEEKS REMEDIAL SOLUTION FOR VOC
CONTAMINATION
In July 2007, Creamer Environmental Inc., a contractor working
on behalf of site owners at a manufactured gas plant (MGP)
site in the eastern US, contacted Evoqua Water Technologies
for assistance in design of a groundwater recovery and
treatment system at that site. The site was typical of hundreds
of small MGP facilities which operated from the early 1800
through the mid 1900’s and produced gas for heating, cooking
and lighting. With the increasing availability and use of pipeline
supplied natural gas, the use of MGP sites declined over time.
Although MGP operations at this site were phased out more
than 50 years ago, contaminants from the operations remained
in the soil, sediments, and groundwater. The current site owner
voluntarily sought to work with the state’s Department of
Environmental Protection (DEP) to remediate the property’s
soil and groundwater contamination.
To address the targeted VOCs, Evoqua’ solution included (1)
PV® Series 10000 lead adsorber containing organoclay media
for the removal of dissolved oils, followed by (1) PV® Series
10000 system, which featured dual adsorbers on a single skid
and containing Westates® reactivated granular carbon for
removal of the VOCs. A piping manifold between the GACcontaining units allows the system to be operated in series
mode. Since the system was not intended to be permanent,
Evoqua provided all the equipment on a rental basis.
In addition to supplying the adsorber equipment and media,
Evoqua provided on-site supervision during set-up and media
installation, along with ongoing technical support.
SIGNIFICANT ACCOMPLISHMENTS
The system operated from March 2008 until March 2009.
During that time, the system treated over 1 million gallons of
water and met the customer’s state discharge permit.
The system operated so successfully that an identical
installation is planned for October 2010 as the project enters
its next phase of remediation.

Results of remedial investigations at the site indicated that
both on- and off-site soil and groundwater were contaminated
with a variety of hazardous substances including volatile
organic compounds (VOCs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons
(PAHs), heavy metals, phenols, and cyanide. Specifically,
on- and off-site well monitoring indicated that the maximum
concentration of VOCs (benzene and trichloroethene)
exceeded their respective environmental guideline for
discharge.
