Version Date: 25/05/2016
Devon & Cornwall Police
Record 1
Freedom of Information Act Request No: 2293/16
Under the FOIA I would like to know the following:
- How many ATM cash machines have been ‘blown up’ in robberies in the calendar
years 2013, 2014 and 2015 and for the first three months of 2016?
Please break down the total number by year. I use the term ‘blown up’ loosely, to
mean any time thieves or want-to-be thieves have targeted an ATM with any form of
explosive / gas canister etc that has caused an explosion/fire in order to steal the
contents. Eg: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-bristol-32173600
I would also like to know the following: - The total amount taken in all these
robberies - If possible, please break down the amount per robbery - If possible, the
total sum recovered
The Performance and Analysis Department have provided the following information:
Data Source:
Crimes recorded on the crime information system/Unifi
Data Processing:
Filtered on entered date 01/01/2013 to 31/12/2015, Offence description of Robbery,
venue of cash dispenser or MO text search for ATM or cash dispenser.
Data:
Further to the above search techniques each crime log was read to determine if it fits
within the parameters of the request. It can be established that from the above search
techniques where the offence was ‘robbery’ 0 records were found where an ATM cash
machine had been blown up for the time period requested.
However, there was an offence classed as “ATTEMPT THEFT FROM METER /
AUTOMATIC MACHINE” where an ATM machine was “blown up”. Please see the
relevant link below:

Please note that the above offence was not picked up from the original search techniques
due to the way the offence description has been recorded.
