Maria Yee was born in the Southern Chinese city of Guangzhou. At 15, when the Cultural Revolution
imprisoned her parents, Maria was sent to work at a rock quarry. After her release, Maria apprenticed as a
machinist and studied to become a mechanical engineer. Witnessing the destruction of China's historic
treasures during the Cultural Revolution incited Maria’s passion to revitalize the art of traditional furniture
making. She gathered a group of expert craftsmen and began handcrafting museum quality Ming Dynasty
reproductions as a personal pursuit. Maria moved to California and founded her namesake company in 1988,
creating both traditional and modern styles.
The artistic merit of Maria Yee's furniture goes beyond beautiful lines and elegant shapes. Every item is
handcrafted with sophisticated joinery techniques, honed through the ages. Maria refined these traditional
techniques to create the proprietary BreathingJoinery™ system tailored to a modern manufacturing
environment. No nails or screws mar the integrity of the raw materials. Maria’s commitment to the planet
includes using responsibly harvested solid hardwood, rapidly renewable Moso bamboo - layered to form solid
bamboo boards that exceed the tensile strength of steel and allow for different textures and finishes, as well
as water-based eco-friendly finishes.
