Upon reviewing hydrologic conditions present during years identified using the abovereferenced criteria, it was noticed that the interior of the refuge was simulated to go dry during several of those years. Because dry conditions at/near station 1-7 (cell 49, 31) are suggestive of dry conditions throughout the central and northern portions of the Refuge, this author initially offered that maintenance of inundated conditions at/near station 1-7, in addition to meeting the above-referenced conditions, might serve as an indicator years in which “good” ecological conditions would likely exist throughout the Refuge. However, upon further consideration and evaluation of model output, it is possible that maintenance of inundated conditions at/near station 1-7, in lieu of meeting the abovereferenced canal stage-based conditions might better serve as an indicator years in which “good” ecological conditions would likely exist throughout the Refuge. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge Estimated Water Needs Method 1) As such the perimeter canal stage-based year-selection guidance used during the screening of simulation results are as follows: Simulated weekly average canal stage must not drop below 14.0 feet during weeks 152; and Simulated weekly average canal stage must be greater than 17.5 feet for at least 2 weeks during weeks 49-52. Method 2) Supplemental year-selection guidance used during further screening of simulation results are as follows: As per the perimeter canal stage-based year-selection guidance provided above, AND weekly average depth at/near station 1-7 (cell 49, 31) must not drop below 0.0 ft during weeks 1-52. Per discussion at the 19-December-2007 Refuge Water Needs meeting, the following supplemental analyses are also presented for discussion: Method 3) Supplemental year-selection guidance used during further screening of simulation results are as follows: Weekly average depth at/near station 1-7 (cell 49, 31) must not drop below 0.0 ft during weeks 1-52. In addition to quantifying inflows and outflows for these years, a more detailed assessment of inflows and outflows during the selected years is presented to allow for an enhanced understanding of potential year-start antecedent conditions and the seasonality of water inputs that might yield “good” conditions (including those years when combined annual inputs of STA1E and STA1W are less than 350,000 ac-ft). Method 4) Supplemental year-selection guidance used during further screening of simulation results are as follows: Weekly average stage in the Refuge does not drop below Zone A1 of its regulation schedule. It should be noted that during every year in the simulated period of record, water levels remain below the floor of zone A1 during nearly all weeks of every year (as approximated using a comparison of rim-canal stages to the regulation schedule time series, and as approximated using a comparison of the average of station 1-7, 18, and 1-9 stages to the regulation schedule time series).
