The Family Health Division has always worked
to help children and families reach their full
potential. While the tenets of Nurturing the
Next Generation (NTNG) are inherent in the
work of Family Health, the establishment of
NTNG as a strategic priority provided an
opportunity for the entire public health unit
to influence the health trajectories of children
in Peel. Over the past five years, we have
conducted both primary research and
literature syntheses to understand the needs
of Peel families and to become experts in the
science of early child development. Moving
forward, we will use evidence-informed
population-based interventions to optimize
early childhood development.

The health and economic implications
associated with diabetes, sedentary
behaviour and unhealthy eating are vast. We
understand that the most effective way to
impact the high rates of obesity and diabetes
in Peel is to focus on policies and programs
that are the underlying determinants of
physical activity, unhealthy eating and
sedentary behaviour. Therefore, we are
influencing policy development in child care
centres, schools, workplaces and the built
environment to create supportive
environments for healthy living.
Living TobaccoFree
Fewer residents of
Peel start smoking;
more will quit and
there will be less
exposure to secondhand smoke.
Five years ago, Peel Public Health focused
largely on provision of direct service.
Although the program used evidenceinformed practices, it was resource-intensive
and its reach was limited. Today, through
surveillance data (see Burden of Tobacco)
and rigorous reviews of research evidence,
we now have a greater understanding of the
smoking issue in Peel. We have identified
target populations for both cessation and
prevention activities and also have an
understanding of effective interventions to
implement over the coming years.
