POSITION SUMMARY:
The African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) is now recruiting two full time Livelihoods Impact
Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Officers for its Heartlands Program in Africa. Each position is
for a two-year term, and on completion the aim is to have established sufficient internal capacity to
develop and maintain the M&E work or to have secured further funding to maintain these as
dedicated positions. The positions will be located in Nairobi (covering eastern and central Africa
Heartlands) and Johannesburg (covering southern African Heartlands). AWF wishes to roll out
methodologies developed for baseline data collection and livelihoods impact monitoring across its
Program in 11 countries, focusing on the impact of land management and enterprise interventions.
The M&E Officers will work with each of the eight Heartland teams to refine and implement AWF
protocols and methodology in key sites, and to ensure sound evaluation of and learning from impact
findings.
KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Work with Heartland Directors and teams to identify priority sites for livelihoods impact
monitoring, and leadership for agreeing and implementing the process, timing and priority
indicators with partners and partner communities.
2. Work with AWF Monitoring and Evaluation team and with Socio-Economics Working
Group to develop detailed methodologies and tools and to ensure a good fit between the
livelihoods monitoring indicators and AWF PIMA (the overall AWF M&E system)
3. Collect baseline and monitoring surveys in target sites, analyse and discuss findings, prepare
reports and agree ongoing monitoring frameworks. Facilitate team learning from monitoring
findings. Present findings within AWF and at other forums as requested.
4. Build capacity in Program and Heartland teams to undertake ongoing monitoring.
5. Liaise with other organizations to share lessons learned

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education
 Reputable degree in relevant field.
Experience




Skills & Knowledge








At least 5 years relevant experience of applied socio-economics work
and/or research at field level in conservation and/or development in
Africa, including direct experience of field based monitoring &
evaluation (M&E) framework design and data collection.
Good understanding of the international discourse on livelihoods and
poverty reduction in relation to conservation and sustainable use of
natural resources.
Solid experience in participatory approaches to M&E
Demonstrable ability to work well with field teams and facilitate
analysis and learning based on impact monitoring.
Demonstrable commitment to AWF mission and understanding
Outstanding data collection, analytical, writing and interpersonal skills;
Ability to communicate effectively with diverse conservation &
development stakeholders;
Advanced computer and internet skills including the use of data
analysis software; Knowledge of GIS technology a distinct advantage.
Comfortable with working as part of a team;
Ability and willingness to fulfill AWF administrative and accounting
procedures;
Fluency in spoken and written English required.
Competency in French (for Nairobi position), Portuguese (for
Johannesburg position) and/or African languages an advantage
