Water Temperature Experiment – Instructions
You will need:
Glo Germ™ Gel
Washing up bowl
Jug
Hand towel
Thermometer
stop watch
record sheet and pencils
Glo-light [UV light only to be used by the teacher and not shone into anyone’s
eyes]
Method
Get your washing up bowl ready with cold water in it and a jug of hot water. ( An
adult will need to help you)
Three of you rub Glo-Germ™ gel onto your hands, making sure to apply it to all areas,
front, back, and around all the fingers. One of you time them washing and another
records the temperatures and results.
One of you rinse your hands in cold water for 60 seconds; don't rub your hands
together. Measure the temperature and record it. Look at the results with the UV light.
Record results on the picture of the hand.
Increase the water temperature to warm. Measure the temperature and record. One of
you put your hands in for 60 seconds without rubbing your hands together. Then
the teacher will help you look at the results with the UV light. [The UV light must
only be used by the teacher]. Record results on the picture of the hand.
Increase the water to hand hot (not burning!), measure the temperature, record and
rinse your hands in the water for 60 seconds. Again, don't rub your hands together.
Observe in the UV light held by the teacher. Record results on the picture of the hand.
Which water temperature seemed to work best?

same way so try to agree a method before you start.
Get your washing up bowl ready with warm water in it.
Three of you need to put the Glo Germ™gel on your hands. One of you needs to use the
stop watch to time and one of you needs to record the results.
The first person washes their hands for 10 seconds. How do your hands look under the UV
light? Record the results.
The second then washes their hands for 20 seconds. Check under the UV light and record
results.
The third then washes them for 30 seconds. Check under UV and record.
Which length of time got the hands the cleanest?
Did washing for any length of time get rid of all the germs?
