decade.Thesectorcontributesapproximately65%ofinputsto
theindustrialsector,makesup23%ofthecountry’sGDP,and
employsapproximatelytwo-thirds(67%)ofTanzania’s
workforce
• Agro-processingprovidesanopportunityforincreasing
incomesandcreatingjobsalongthevaluechainthrough
expansionofforwardandbackwardlinkagesintheeconomy.
Today,however,themajorityofcropsinthecountryare
marketedinrawformwithlittleornovalueaddition
• Tanzaniahastheabilitytoproducemostrawmaterials,
resultingfromfavorablesoilandagro-ecologicalzonesacross
thecountry
• Twotrendsthatsupporttheneedforagro-processing:
– Rapidurbanizationandaffordabilityisgrowingthelocal
demandforfoodproductsinTanzania. Forexample,
disposableincomeisallowingfamiliestopurchaseprocessed
rice,sugar,andedibleoil
– Alargeandgrowingfoodimportbill,especiallyforprocessed
food,testifiestothepotentialofdomesticagro-processing.
