KEY SKILLS LEVEL 1 This assignment covers: Application of Number Administration September 2005 Administration AON 1 September 05 1 This assignment provides evidence for: AON N1.1 Interpret straightforward information from two different sources. At least one source must include a table, chart, diagram or line graph. N1.2 Carry out straightforward calculations to do with a) amounts or sizes b) scales or proportion. c) handling statistics N1.3 Interpret the results of your calculations and present your findings in two different ways, using charts or diagrams. Points to note Show all your calculations and include examples of showing checking for each type of calculation. Show manual calculations and calculations carried out with a calculator. State the level of accuracy you are working to. Administration AON 1 September 05 2 SCENARIO Your organisation has just moved premises and your employer has asked you to look at the make-up of the administration area and incorporate Health and Safety aspects such as size of workplace and temperature at the workplace. It is important that the temperature in the office lies within the legal recommendations required. You have been asked by your manager to carry out a survey over one week to see whether temperatures are within the recommended limit. The manager is also concerned that he has to make maximum use of the space available. He would like to know how many people are legally allowed in your office. He would like to use your findings to help him with the office layout. Regulations state that ‘one person needs 11 m³ of space, using a fixed height of 3m’. Regulations state that ‘the temperature in workrooms should normally be at least 16 degrees Celsius unless much of the work involves severe physical effort in which case the temperature should be at least 13 degrees Celsius.’ Your manager has asked you to put your findings in a report together with your recommendations. Administration AON 1 September 05 3 The following temperatures were taken in the office over a period of one week: Day Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Temperatures measured in oC 9 am 12 noon 16 19 14 15 14 16 15 19 16 19 3 pm 18 19 16 18 17 The office manager has given you the following measurements for the office area. 6.1 m 8.7 m Administration AON 1 September 05 4 Tutor Notes N1.1: Planning Purpose: To find out whether the office is in line with legal requirements regarding temperature and allowable workspace. 1.1.1: Obtain information you need to meet purpose of task Source 1: Sketch drawing of workplace Source 2: Table of temperatures 1.1.2: Identify suitable calculations to get the results needed (in words) c handling statistics Work out mean average temperatures Mean = total temperatures divided by number collected (15). Calculate range of temperatures. Range = highest value – lowest value a amounts or sizes Calculate area of workplace Area = length* width. Calculate volume of workplace Volume = area * height Calculate number of people allowed in workplace Volume divided by 11m3/person = number of people allowed in office b scales or proportion Calculate a suitable scale to produce scale drawing of the workplace Use scale 1:50 Formula: Length/50 = scaled down number Width/50 = scaled down number Administration AON 1 September 05 5 N1.2: Carrying out calculations All calculations must be shown together with check and given level of accuracy. Learner must show calculations with and without calculator (witnessed by assessor). c handling statistics Work out mean average temperatures Mean = total temperatures divided by number collected (15).
