a message
from the
president:
What a great time of year as we begin to witness the first change of season for 2016….the
last long nights of winter and the beginning days
of spring. We are all anticipating putting away
our skis and ice skates as excitement builds for
spring break.
For those who have stayed the winter, you have
been observing the remaining stages of our club
remodeling and refurbishing. For those who
have wintered elsewhere, you will be pleased
to see the final results of our 2010 survey upon your return. Yes, that is correct… the 2010 survey!! Based on those results, the long-range planning
committee, along with the board, organized the membership priorities and
began their work as follows:
- IMPROVEMENTS TO THE POOL AREA
* 2012 redesigned shaded area
-INCREASE OUTSIDE CASUAL DINING
*2013 completion of our expanded patio and fire pits
-IMPROVE DRIVING RANGE AND TEACHING AREA
*2014 completion of our redesigned driving range
*2015 opening of our year round golf performance center
March Into Membership at CHCC!
With the arrival of March, we are busily preparing for an actionpacked spring season complete with brunches, leagues, Junior
Sports and more! Check out the programs below to see what
CHCC has to offer your friends and family:
LEGACY PROGRAM: Strengthen your family connections and
invite a grandparent, parent, child, grandchild, or sibling to join
Cascade. If you have been a member in good standing for a
minimum of 5 years, they will receive complimentary initiation in
any category!
RETURNING RESIGNED CHCC MEMBERS: If you know of
any past members who are interested in reconnecting at Cascade Hills, they are invited to rejoin the family! The Resigned
Members Program offers any past CHCC member who was in
good standing for 5 consecutive years and has been resigned
from the Club for a minimum of 5 years to reapply for membership in their previously held category or a lesser category with
no initiation fee requirement. If it hasn’t been 5 years since we
parted ways, their resignation will be treated like a Leave of
Absence. Instead of initiation fees, they may return to active
membership by paying the back assessment for each year
resigned.

NEW MEMBER SPONSOR PROGRAM: Without our current

With the completion of the 2010 survey action plan, we now begin the work
on the 2015 survey. The long-range planning committee has been assigned
the responsibility to develop the next plan. Working in conjunction with the
Finance Committee and the Board, I hope to report back before the end of
the year what the plan for CHCC will be over the next 5+ years.
On behalf of the board, I would like to thank all members who participated
in the survey, which enabled us to proceed in this positive direction. Please
remember, your comments are very valuable and help to drive the future of
the club.

In Memoriam
We extend our most sincere condolences to the family of:
Elizabeth (Betty)
Baxter
I am pleased to report our new membership activity remains very strong.
Our annual attrition was what we had anticipated. The membership inquiries
and members in process continue at a steady pace. If the trend continues
we anticipate all membership categories should be full by midyear.
Finally, this month I would like to recognize and thank some of our long
serving members of our kitchen staff. These are some of the unsung, and
most often unseen, staff members who have been here for 10+ years and
make CHCC one of the finest clubs in Michigan: Chef Kim Meuser - 43
years, Kevin Knape - 30 years, Richard “Richie” Holmes - 23 years, Jill
Gross - 22 years, Terry Moore - 18 years, Henry Conway- 16 years and
Roel Smith - 16 years. On behalf of the membership, I thank all of you for
enriching all of our experiences here at CHCC.
Best regards,

How to Fuel Up for Endurance Workouts
Many are familiar that before embarking on an endurance workout, it is important to prepare your body
via hydration and food. However, we frequently forget that properly fueling your body during and after
the workout is just as important!
Carbohydrates are the body’s main source of fuel during exercise. A diet high in carbohydrate-rich foods
such as whole grain products, vegetables, fruits and legumes, can help you exercise longer and faster.
What you eat before, during and after an endurance exercise can also impact your performance and
recovery.
SUNDAY
7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
MONDAY
6:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.
TUESDAY – FRIDAY
5:30 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.
SATURDAY
6:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.
1. BEFORE: Approximately 2 – 4 hours before an endurance event, drink plenty of fluids and try to
eat a meal high in carbohydrates (e.g. grain products, fruits and vegetables), relatively low in protein
(small servings of choices such as chicken, beans, or hummus), and fiber and low in fat. This may help boost energy, prevent hunger, keep you hydrated, and help you sustain longer before exhaustion hits. Carbohydrate-rich snack examples include some sport
bars, fruit, cereal with milk, lentils, bagels, pasta, yogurt, and homemade granola bars.
2. DURING: During intense exercise that lasts longer than one hour, eating carbohydrates might help extend time to exhaustion
and may improve performance in some activities such as sprints and agility drills. Approximately 30 – 70 g of carbohydrates per
hour (such as in the form of a sports drink), in small amounts every 15 to 20 minutes, can improve exercise performance. For
activities lasting longer than an hour or in extreme heat, sports drinks provide hydration as well as carbohydrates. It is important
that you drink enough during and after exercise to replace the fluid you lose through sweat.
3. POST ACTIVITY: Once your activity is finished, your body is ready to store energy again, repair muscles and fill up with fluids.
Carbohydrates eaten within 30 minutes of exercise and again every two hours for four to six hours will replenish glycogen stores.
Meals or snacks should also contain protein for building and repairing muscle and fluids for rehydrating. Immediately after
endurance exercise, good choices would be a smoothie (blend milk, fruit and ice together), sport drink, chocolate milk and water.
Soon after exercise choose a meal or snack rich in protein and carbohydrates (chicken, fish, vegetables, whole gain rolls / breads).
Healthy eating and well planned meals will help make your long exercises more enjoyable, as well as keep you healthy and strong!
Please don’t hesitate to contact me @ 616-437-7301 or [email protected] if you have any questions I may answer.
Boost Your Mental Health with Massage
While often revered for its physical benefits, massage has also shown to greatly improve mental
and emotional health. Researchers at the University of Miami followed 37 breast cancer patients
who received massage therapy or practiced progressive muscle relaxation for five weeks.
Women in the massage group reported feeling less depressed and angry, and they had more
energy. In a University of South Florida study of high blood pressure patients, those who got
10-minute massages three times a week for three weeks lowered their blood pressure by 11
points.
Additionally, a review of more than a dozen massage studies conducted by the Touch Research
Institute at the University of Miami School of Medicine concludes that massage therapy relieves
depression and anxiety by affecting the body’s biochemistry. In a series of studies including about 500 men, women, and children,
researchers measured the stress hormone cortisol in participants before and immediately after massage. The findings included that the
massage therapy lowered cortisol levels by up to 53%. This is an important discovery, considering cortisol can drive up blood pressure,
blood sugar levels, and suppresses the immune system. Massage also increased serotonin and dopamine; neurotransmitters that help
boost mental well-being.

Caddie Brennan Burke was recently awarded
the 25th Evans Scholarship to a CHCC “looper.”
Brennan has been caddying for the past four

record. Scholastically, Brennan has achieved a
weighted GPA of 4.47, an ACT score of 32, and
2 years of National Honors Society, while balancing four years of both baseball and football at

Welcome to March; the home of Easter, St. Patrick’s Day, and March Madness! Why do I have a feeling
this month will blow by too? Hopefully you have enjoyed our poor excuse for a Michigan winter thus far. 10”
of snow here, 55 degrees and sunny there, it’s incredibly odd. My guess is between the on again-off again
weather pattern (not to mention Punxsutawney Phil’s groundhog day prediction) we will be seeing an early
spring and therefore an early start to the golf season. And judging by the general activity at the GPC, many of
you will be in midseason form in April! It is fantastic seeing the activity out there in our first winter. The guys
were actually able to pick up balls the day before the last snow storm and it was funny to watch a lap made
by the picker. There were so many balls out there the baskets were overflowing after a down and back pass!
Another benefit of the GPC this spring will be to have our equipment vendors over to show off shiny, new
product much earlier than our norm. You’ll note in the promotion illustrating the upcoming TaylorMade demo
day on Saturday, March 12 from 2:00-5:00pm. We are also scheduling Titleist, Callaway and Ping to make
appearances in the coming weeks. Ahhh, don’t you just love that new club smell?!
With the expected early start, the Golf Shop is responding by moving several of our apparel vendors up in
delivery to meet the needs of those heading away for spring break and any potential golf played here in West
Michigan. Vineyard Vines, Dunning, Foot-Joy, Under Armor, San Soleil, and Peter Millar should all have some
presence in the Golf Shop by the mid to late March.
Winter time is also the time for our annual trade show and education shows. This year Orlando was a bit
shorter of a trip than the norm as I was able to attend the Merchandisers Conference prior to the start of the
Show week. This conference is invitation only of past National and Section award winners. It was a fantastic
few days of networking, breakout sessions, and learning from some of the very best in our industry.
In February we also made a trip to Las Vegas for the annual Magic/Platform retail apparel shows. This 3 day junket includes nine
different retail shows covering any and all genres from sourcing to super high end brands. This is the first time in the last three years
we’ve attended, but the trip was wonderfully fruitful. We will be anxious to present several new lines for the late summer and fall seasons.
Lastly, you also may have noticed the annual Titleist Loyalty Rewarded promotion featuring the “buy 3 get one free” on Titleist Pro-V1 golf
balls. This is one of the best offerings that Titleist does; pick your favorite number and personalize the side with your initials or something
wittier. If you find one of Mark Ellis’s golf balls on the grounds, it usually earns you a free car wash! The promotion begins March 17, but
you can pre-book your order any time prior by following our easy to use Survey Monkey” link. It is straight forward and will be included in
the first orders submitted on opening day. Easy peazy! https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/TitleistBallPromo

I know that we are ALL waiting for that snow to melt and get out onto that grass and play golf. The question is,
have you been practicing to get ready?
As I have spent my first winter here at the Golf Performance Center, I see some people getting better and
some stuck in the snow. I see them hitting bag after bag after bag after bag after bag and not a lot is changing.
The biggest difference in why some people get better and the other ones do not is how they practice. Now, you
are probably thinking, “why do I want to read about practice?” How we practice has a direct correlation to how
you play, so I am going to help you practice better to play better!
What many people do after hitting a bad shot on the driving range is quickly reach for another ball. They hit
that next ball just as bad then quickly reach for yet another ball. My suggestion for that? Stop the insanity!!
After you hit a bad shot, the real question is, what could you do to improve that? Here are some helpful tips for
you to ask yourself when practicing.
1. VISUALIZE IT - If I can see it, then can I do it. Get a clear picture in your head on what you want to
achieve with that shot.
2. PHYSICALLY PREPARE - This is simple, just take a moment and do a few practice swings to prime yourself for the desired movement. It might take one, two or three tries, but make sure it matches your desired
outcome.
3. PAY ATTENTION - After you hit the shot, watch it, absorb it and ask yourself if that was what you wanted
to do.
4. REPEAT, REPEAT, REPEAT - Keep repeating this cycle after every shot. If it is hard to do this with full
shots, try and take smaller slower golf swings to get what you want.
If you start to practice this way on almost every shot, you will learn what it takes to repeat this process on the golf course. We have to learn
to practice like we play and play like we practice. If you need help learning how to or what to practice, please contact me so we can get
you on the right path (pun intended). The easiest way is by my email, [email protected]. Let’s make 2016 your best year for golf!
See you at the Indoor Teaching Tee!

March has arrived and the days
continue to waffle between winter
and spring conditions. The days
are getting longer and I can almost
see the light at the end of the
tunnel. Cross your fingers for an
early spring!
TREE TRIMMING
Tree care is continuous each year.
Recently we pruned a number of
trees around the clubhouse and
golf course. Pruning needs to be
done every few years to elevate trees and keep them structurally sound, which helps eliminate mower damage from hanging
branches along with avoiding damage during large wind storms. It
also helps turf survive under the trees by eliminating shade. Oak
trees should only be pruned in January and February due to the
ever increasing Oak Wilt disease in our area – Oak Wilt will kill
Oaks trimmed at other times of the year along with Oaks around
the pruned trees through grafting roots. A majority of trees that we
trimmed were Oaks and Maples.
EARLY SEASON COURSE MAINTENANCE
• Greens Core Aeration & Topdressing: We will hollow tine
greens with a small tine on quad block as early as possible
this spring. The holes will be smaller and closer together to
remove organic matter from the top 4 inches. Smaller holes
also heal quicker and produce firmer healthier putting surfaces through the season. We will also deep tine and dryject
the greens this spring, with both of these being completed as
early as possible. The deep tine improves drainage and the
dryjecting improves firmness, ball roll, and healthier greens.
• Tee Core Aeration & Topdressing: We will continue to work on
tee firmness and health. We will core aerate with 5/8” tines,
then remove cores and fill the holes with sand. This again will
be done as early as possible.
• Fairway Verti-cutting: Fairway verti-cutting will also be completed this spring, which removes thatch, improves density
and helps them be healthy through the season.
MCMAHON SURVEY
Recently many of you completed the 2015 McMahon Survey and
I appreciate that over 80 percent were satisfied with conditions on
the grounds and the course! I also looked for common threads of
your concerns and these have been topics of conversation in our
committee meetings. As always these are areas that we will strive
to improve with your support and as time allows. A few projects
were completed this past fall, with more to come this season. This
should help with future enjoyment of the Club.
DRAIN TILE
The contractor completed tiling on holes #1, #9, #10, #12 and #18
this past fall in many low, wet areas. We will need to dress up a
few areas this spring but I could definitely see the difference during
our winter thaws and rains. It’s much drier!
BARE AREAS IMPROVED
This fall we prepped and laid topsoil and sod on many of the
areas on the course along paths and where trees and traffic had
crowded out the turf. We used over 50 cu. yards of topsoil and 2
semi-trailers of sod to improve these areas. I’m sure you will enjoy
the results.

CART PATH REPAIRS
Late summer and early fall last season we also repaired and
replaced a number of paths on the course since many areas had
been buckled by tree roots, frost heaving and general age. It had
been about ten years since our last work on paths, so this should
give a smoother ride with a better look on the course.
GROUNDS IMPROVEMENTS
• This spring we will have a landscape contractor plant trees
on the entrance boulevard and redo the landscaping around
the portico and front door entrance of the clubhouse. The
Grounds Committee has looked over the plans with the contractor who has a nice resume of work in our area and I think
you will be pleased with the improvements.
• We’ll also be adding touches of color around other areas of
the clubhouse and course per your request. Many will be
seasonal displays that I think you will enjoy.
• With recent improvements around the terrace area landscaping and the other new improvements, we’ve hired a person
to concentrate his efforts of clubhouse grounds and course
beds. Rich Gretz will continue to operate and supervise
rough mowers, and continue to assist in clubhouse duties.
FUTURE GOLF COURSE IMPROVEMENTS
• After careful analysis and consideration, The Grounds Committee has met with the Golf Course Architect a number
of times over the past few years on possible golf course
improvements. This ties in directly with results from the McMahon Survey that support a few of these projects.
• Projects that are being considered are bunker renovations,
modifying the slope on #7 green and reversing the golf holes
on #14 and #15.
• The bunker project would work inside the existing bunkers improving drainage, and provide a more period correct design.
It would also improve sand and playing consistency, similar
in design to the driving range bunkers that were recently
completed.
• #7 green slope modifications would mitigate some of the severity to gain more reasonable pin positions. This would help
to keep the speed of greens uniform throughout the course.
Very minor slope changes.
• Reversing the direction on holes #14 and #15: After a number
of discussions with the Golf Course Architect Bruce Matthews
over the last few years, The Grounds Committee would like to
recommend we reverse direction on holes #14 and #15. The
two golf holes, although challenging, match nothing we have
on the rest of the course, either in fairway or greens contours.
Another big plus would be that both landing areas, if played in
reverse, allow for more adequate reception of tee shots. The
Architect also feels we can construct greens on each hole
that match most of our existing 1921 style green contours.
• While the committee feels these are important projects, they
are still in the planning stage. Adequate funding and timing are important considerations in
seeking approval to move forward.
You’ll see more information on these
projects soon.
That’s it for now. Think spring and I look
forward to seeing you on the course.
