SOFTWARE DEFINED DATA CENTER
Relatively new concept
Thrust into the mainstream by VMWare
Whirlwind of related press during VMWorld Summer 2012
SDN came first!
Looking back, the Mega Trend is clear
Phase 1: Virtualization, birth of the hypervisor
Phase 2: Virtual Desktop Infrastructure
Phase 3: Software Defined DataCenter

WHY ?
Ok, but why does anyone need any of this stuff?
The collective vision, SDD will enable:
Greater IT flexibility and utilization of hardware assets
More quickly & easily deploy applications
Greater efficiency

WHY SDN & SDS?
SDN and SDS are fundamental ‘must have’ capabilities
Data Centers by definition have:
Compute.
But is there such thing as ‘software defined compute’?
Yes! We call it a hypervisor.
Networking. -> Software Defined Networking
Storage -> Software Defined Storage
Many young companies and some legacy are claiming to be SDS
Nexenta, CoRAID, GridStore…
Validates vision & market opportunity

SOFTWARE DEFINED STORAGE
How do you define SDS?
Depends on who you are talking to.
Openness
The days of proprietary hardware based systems are beginning to fade
Standards based
Ubiquity
Widely available solutions
Works with all major existing protocols
Abstraction
Simple, cost effective storage hardware. JBODs rule all!
Everything from RAID, HA through protocols is implemented in software
True, committed companies do not sell hardware.
Nexenta was SDS before it was cool.

THE ROAD AHEAD
SDx Vision
Greater IT flexibility and utilization of hardware assets
More quickly & easily deploy applications
Greater efficiency
For Software Defined Storage
Evolution not Revolution
Today can deploy Virtual Storage Appliances, or bare-metal Storage Appliances
Policy driven storage deployment (See NexentaVSA for View)
Policy driven VSA deployment and management
