Challenge:
An independent oil and gas exploration and production company requested assistance in reducing their rig mobilization
time in the Marcellus Shale area. Client moves averaged approximately 8.7 days and client desired to significantly
reduce this non-productive time to improve overall financial and operational efficiency while also improving safety.
Assessment and Solution Implementation:
After assessing a move and following extensive discussions with the client, alignment was achieved involving
program objectives, support for program obtained from drilling contractors and clear performance expectations were
communicated with the trucking companies.
With the full support of the client, Check-6 Consultants implemented a number of process changes including:
• A comprehensive and collaborative planning process facilitated before every move
• Development of detailed rig down, trucking, and rig up plans
• Use of roustabouts, trained over time and paired with drilling contractor hands to augment crews during labor
intensive rig down and rig up work phases
• Detailed planning to minimize effects of weekend and holiday trucking curfews restricting movement of permit
loads
• Use of a structured communication process involving a morning operations and safety meeting, mid-day refocus
meetings, and end of day after-action-review meeting to gather lessons learned and plan for the evening and next
day’s operations
• Facilitated JSA briefings to ensure all aspects of every safety critical task are understood before commencing
operations
• Gradually introduced night operations to make better use of this normally non-productive time (to include setting
in items, some trucking, and light crane operations)
• Gathering and use of lessons learned from previous moves to continuously improve operations

Results:
Brief
Client achieved an average 40% reduction in move times involving three different
drilling contractors executing over 20 moves. Approximately 25% of moves
achieved in 4.1 days or less without a recordable injury. The client’s return on
investment has exceeded 400% and the added predictability resulting from a
more consistent mobilization process has eased planning for the next stage in
the completions process.
