This form should be completed by food business operators in respect of new food business
establishments and should be received by Barrow in Furness Borough Council 28 days before
commencing food operations. On the basis of the activities carried out, certain food business
establishments are required to be approved rather than registered. If you are unsure whether any

NOTES ON REGISTRATION OF FOOD BUSINESSES
Why do I need to register?
The law requires registration of premises used as a food business. Registration allows local
authorities to keep an up-to-date list of all those premises in their area so they can visit them when
they need to. The frequency of visits depends on the type of business.
Anyone starting a new business must register with the local authority at least 28 days before doing so.
Is there a charge for Registration?
There is no charge for registering as a food business

What happens to the information given on the form?
The local authority will enter the details on a register. A register of addresses and the type of business
carried on at each will be open to inspection by the general public.
What do I need to do if the information I have provided changes?
Once you have registered with the Local Authority you only need notify them;



if the nature of the business changes,
if there is a change of address at which the movable premises are kept,
If there is a change in food business operator the new proprietor will need to complete an
application form.
