SCHOOL MARSHAL JOB DESCRIPTION Department Responsible to Senior Deputy Head Date April 2017 Responsible for N/A Job Purpose To assist the Head Master and SMT in the smooth and efficient running of the School by ensuring that pupil discipline (including, but not limited to: behaviour; conduct towards others; dress standards; appearance; punctuality etc.) is maintained at all times during the School term. To work closely with the Head Master, members of the SMT, boarding staff, pastoral staff and academic staff to ensure that the duties of the post are delivered effectively. The post holder may have additional School responsibilities but these must be conducted in a manner which does not conflict with the vitally important duties of the School Marshal. The post is full-time. Working hours are as required to perform the role effectively and as agreed with the Senior Deputy Head. Reporting Structure Senior Deputy Head Duty SMT Member SMT, academic, boarding and pastoral staff School Marshal Responsibilities/Accountabilities As directed by the Senior Deputy Head, to: Provide a conspicuous, alert and attentive presence whenever pupils are gathered together in large numbers outside the classroom environment. Annex A indicates the minimum occasions when and where this is required. Assist the duty SMT member by supervising pupils at all major whole-school events such as whole-school Chapel, Head Master’s assemblies, fireworks displays, rock concerts etc. Develop an appreciation of pupil behaviour patterns, including likely transgressors, times/events where risks are greatest and likely locations where issues may occur. Be aware of all relevant school policies relating to pupil discipline, such as codes of conduct, appearance etc. and ensure that they are properly enforced. Provide appropriate, reassuring and calm information, advice and guidance to individual pupils when required or when requested. Refer those pupils whose dress standards are inadequate to attend Dress Parade. Assist with the running of Co-curricular Detentions at leave weekends and at the end of term. Keep the Senior Deputy Head and, where appropriate, duty SMT member, informed of situations and individuals that are, or might be, of particular concern. Accompany the Head Master or Deputy Head on weekly boarding house inspections. Assist the Deputy Heads by liaising with the Police on relevant School disciplinary matters, in the execution of drug testing and by co-ordinating on site visits from dogs units etc. Supervise pupils departing from Christ’s Hospital railway station for leave weekends, half term and end of term. On a rota basis, supervise pupils on the leave weekend return coach from Victoria. Parade the School mace on appropriate ceremonial occasions. Contribute as required to School Monitor training and development. Oversee and advise on the standards of pupils’ marching for all appropriate events, including Band Parade, Speech Day, St. Matthew’s Day etc. Ensure that the School’s Bicycle Policy is properly enforced. Assist the SHEF Manager with the management of fire safety at Christ’s Hospital School. This is a part-time role that is combined with the normal day-to-day responsibilities of the post holder Carry out any other suitable duties as required by the Senior Deputy Head, commensurate with the post holder’s training and experience. In addition: If appropriate, make proposals to the Senior Deputy Head for new or improved internal processes for more efficient or more effective work management. Comply with all relevant School policies, procedures and instructions. Show respect at all times for the confidential nature of information concerning the work and business of the School. PERSON SPECIFICATION Experience (Types of experience needed) Qualifications (Minimum qualifications needed, relevant experience may be a substitute) Skills & Abilities (Written/oral communication, dealing with public, team working skills, etc.) Working with children of both genders, aged 11 to 18. Previous experience in a school environment is desirable. Up to date with training in child protection/safeguarding and the Prevent agenda (can be provided by the School if necessary). First Aid trained (or prepared to undergo training at the School’s expense). Smart and presentable at all times – able to act as an excellent role model for the pupils. Able to command the respect of pupils and staff – setting high standards and enforcing them in a professional and calm manner. Alert and with an eye for detail. Good oral and written communication skills. Self-motivated, pro-active and able to work well under own initiative and without supervision. Able to earn the respect of, and work well with, children of both genders aged 11 to 18, some of whom will have emotional, disciplinary or pastoral difficulties. Able to work to a flexible timetable, including evenings and weekends during term-time. Additional Work Elements The post is subject to a satisfactory Enhanced DBS disclosure. This post operates year-round In the event of a major incident or disaster, the post holder may be required to provide assistance in whatever capacity necessary and participate in any training to ensure the School is fully prepared for such incidents. The following timetable indicates the minimum occasions when this is likely to occur: Monday to Friday 0715 o/c - 0805 0825 1130 1245 - 1320 1325 - 1340 1340 - 1415 1720 - 1850 Evening Supervise Dress Parade Present in Dining Hall throughout breakfast, taking the lead on all pupil disciplinary matters Present in main Quad and Quarter Mile to ensure pupils are correctly dressed and on time for Period 1 Present in main Quad and Quarter Mile to ensure pupils are on time for Period 5, after break Present in Dining Hall before and during Junior lunch, ensuring all pupils leave in good time for Band Parade Oversee all aspects of Band Parade Present in Dining Hall throughout Senior lunch Show a regular presence in Dining Hall during Junior and Senior Tea, ensuring all pupils leave in good time for House Roll Call at 1900 In conjunction with duty SMT member, patrol areas of the site where pupils are known to gather, including wooded areas, Big Side, Downs Link and perimeters Weekends As above, plus: Evening As agreed with the duty SMT member and event organisers, assist at School disco’s, film nights and other major pupil social occasions.
