Supplemental Activities: Extension 1: The Tale of Peter Rabbit Materials needed: o jar o water o cotton balls o bean seeds Synopsis: Explore the wonder of growing seeds into plants with this simple, science infused concrete activity. Begin by placing the available cotton balls into your receptacle. Tuck one or two of the seeds down into the side of the container, keeping the visibility of the seed in mind. Afterwards, water the packed cotton, just to the point of dampness. Within 2-3 days you should notice the bean(s) beginning to sprout a small root, and 2-3 days later, little tendrils. After another 4-5 days, the bean will develop a large network of shoots coming off the main root, as well as a sturdy stem that will grow upwards above the top of the cotton. Just a day or two after, you will see large green leaves begin to unfurl from a steadily growing plant. Additional experiences might include: o photographing the process and sequencing the pictures o measuring the beans daily and recording their growth o labeling a diagram o carefully removing the plant and studying its parts o replanting in a garden area, if available Extension 2: The Snowy Day Provided supplies: o Game board and corresponding pieces Materials needed: o Dice Synopsis: A simple, fun counting game that encourages one-to-one correspondence. This may be played either individually or in a small group format with 2-3 children. The first student will begin by rolling the die. He or she will then be asked to match the number rolled to the subsequent printed number found on the card. The student will then declare the color of Peter’s suit associated with their number and finally, attempt to pick out the circle with the correct color word. If the same color is obtained a second time, the die should be rolled by that player again. The goal is to acquire three pieces, in an effort to build a snowman. Ex: o Student rolls a 1 o Student locates the number 1 on the card, and finds that Peter is purple o Student searches for the word ‘purple’ on the corresponding circular pieces o Student collects 3 DIFFERENT white, round shapes and has completed the task Extension 3: Where’s Spot? Provided supplies: o Sequencing cards Materials needed: o Magnetic board or pocket chart (optional) Synopsis: Highlighting the importance of reconstruction to aide in the development of meaning, students will recall the succession of events that leads to the discovery of Spot at the end of the story.
