BAKER COLLEGE INSTRUCTOR RECEIVES HIGH HONOR
The Public Broadcasting Service, PBS, recently announced
the members of its 2016 PBS LearningMedia Digital Innovators
Program. Now in its fourth year, PBS LearningMedia honors
educators from across the country who exemplify excellence in
using technology and digital media to support student learning.
A panel of esteemed judges selected 52 educators from
throughout the U.S. as Lead Innovators, this year representing
almost every state, territory and Washington D.C. Baker
College’s own Andy Hopkins was selected the Lead
Innovator for the State of Michigan.
In addition to teaching at Baker College, Andy Hopkins is an
Instructional Technology Specialist with Harper Woods
Schools. PBS noted that Andy conducts regular teacher inservices on technology use and mentors teachers in best
practices for classroom implementation. He works directly with
teachers to design lessons and activities with purposeful
technology integration. He also works with students in
buildings across the district as they create and share creative,
multimodal projects and is committed to supporting students as
they learn and become autonomous and responsible users of

S.W.A.T. (Students Working to Advance Technology),
employing a range of video production equipment.
The 2016 PBS LearningMedia Digital Innovators are awarded
with year-long professional development opportunities, virtual
trainings, exclusive resources from PBS LearningMedia
Custom and more. Additionally, the Innovators will receive an
all-expense paid trip to Denver, Colorado to participate in the
2016 PBS LearningMedia Digital Summit and the International
Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) conference. Andy
noted, “I'm very excited about the training and what I can bring
back to my district and Baker students.”

INTERIOR DESIGN
HONORED BY NKBA
Ana Mancina displays award with instructor James Settimo
Interior Design student Ana Mancina was chosen by the
National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) to receive its
Outstanding Student Award. Ana won based on her GPA,
excellence in design and the fact that she juggles other
responsibilities outside of school. The award was sponsored
by Subzero Wolf (manufacturers of high end kitchen
appliances) and NKBA. The Auburn Hills interior design
program was also recognized and was awarded $500 for
excellence - for meeting deadlines in annual reports and high
scores on student projects. Commented program director
Ann Jacob, “It has been a very good year for Interior Design!”

CYANOACRYLATE (SUPERGLUE) FUMING
Ridge detail on nonporous surfaces, either
latent or visible, can be exposed to
cyanoacrylate (Superglue) fumes. These fumes
will adhere to the moisture
deposited by friction ridge
skin and turn the ridges
white. The reaction also
stabilizes the ridge detail to
better preserve it for possible
future enhancement (through
use of fingerprint powder at
the scene or by use of dye
stains back at the Lab), and
collection at a scene or in the
Laboratory.

CAS GETS TINY VOLUNTEERS

hosted its
4th annual
Pediatric
Echo Clinic
on April 21,
2016. The
students
were able
to perform

ultrasounds
on children ranging from infants to teenagers. Dr. Julie
Sommerfield from Children's Hospital of Michigan was on
hand to assist the students in performing pediatric
ultrasound views. Kids are much different to echo than
adults! Also present were pediatric sonographers from
Children's Hospital, U of M, and Beaumont, several of
which are Baker graduates of the CAS Program. A
special thanks to Seimens and GE Medical for loaning
equipment for this special day. It was a hectic afternoon
but much fun as well. Several of the current CAS students
hope to continue on in pediatric cardiac ultrasound after
RESPIRATORY CARE RECEIVES
HIGH RECOGNITION
Baker College of Auburn Hills’ Respiratory Care program was
selected by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care
(CoARC) to receive the Distinguished RRT Credentialing Success
Award. This is a national award that evaluates many factors,
including graduate employment and student pass rates on the
national exam. Well-deserved congratulations go out to Kathy
Miller, Program Director, and Tonya Pope, Clinical Coordinator, for
this achievement. It might sound familiar, as this is the second
year in a row that the program has been recognized at this level!

CoARC is the accrediting body for respiratory care programs at
the associate, bachelor’s and master’s degree level in the U.S.
Ms. Miller and Ms. Pope have been invited to receive a certificate
of recognition during the CoARC Summer Forum in Ponte Vedra
Beach, Florida, in June. Kathy Miller commented, “I’m honored
and I take my responsibility very seriously. I have high esteem for
all the graduates in the program.”

BCAH CELEBRATES
ADMINISTRATIVE
PROFESSIONALS DAY
The administrative assistants for the
Auburn Hills campus were treated to a
nice luncheon on April 26 by campus
president Dr. Pete Karsten and their
supervisors in honor of Administrative
Professionals Day.
GARDENING DAY IS MAY 28
After much anticipation, the community garden is close to
becoming a reality! Planting boxes and soil are ready to go
on the Atrium patio. Planting day is scheduled on May 27
from 12-2:00pm and May 28 from 9-11am. A variety of
vegetables and herbs will be raised to benefit the community
as well as participants. Come on out and help plant!
GRADUATION 2016
This year’s Commencement Ceremonies for the Auburn Hills
campus will take place on Friday, June 17, 2016, at the
Apostolic Church of Auburn Hills. The church is located at
3655 N. Squirrel Rd, just one mile north of Walton. There will
be a 4pm ceremony for health science graduates and a 7pm
ceremony for business, education, human services, criminal
justice, early childhood and technical graduates. For more

BOOKSTORE RENOVATION
The Barnes & Noble/Baker College Bookstore will be under
renovation starting May 9 through May 20. The Bookstore is
scheduled to remain open for business during construction but
there may be specific times or certain days that it will be closed
due to construction. Your patience is greatly appreciated. Please

need assistance.

MTAM TEAM!
The Baker College of Auburn Hills Mobile Technology Association
of Michigan (MTAM) Student Chapter is recruiting students to join
our MTAM team. As a member of MTAM, students will have
many opportunities to grow, network, and prepare for their future
regardless of their career direction. MTAM student members will
have some unique opportunities to work with corporate sponsors,
member companies, participate in beta testing, attend mobile
events, and much more. For more information about MTAM, you
