UC DAVIS | UC BERKELY | CSU SACRAMENTO WWW.BPSHI.COM | [email protected] 2012-2013 Board Member Application Bhagat Puran Singh lived a life devoted to serving others. While he was homeless, he begged for money not to nourish himself, but for those who were even less fortunate than he. Starting with nothing, Bhagat Puran Singh cared for an abandoned child diagnosed with leprosy. Eventually, he was able to build the largest free health care institution in Northern India, called Pingalwara (Home for the Handicapped and Abandoned). In honor of Bhagat Puran Singh’s devotion to humanity and selfless service, UC Davis and Sacramento State students collaborated to start the Bhagat Puran Singh Health Initiative. Where Bhagat Puran Singh dedicated his life to serve those in need, we hope to make a mark on the world by striving to live as he did by using our knowledge, manpower, and resources. Our mission: 1) To provide basic health care screening and general health/nutrition advice to undeserved and neglected communities. 2) To fight heart disease and diabetes among the at-risk populations and promote general health knowledge to prevent chronic disease. 3) To Promote Youth Advancement among underserved populations. 4) To Promote Social Justice among our members and in the community. As a part of the program, each Board Member must attend all general meetings, which will be scheduled on at various times decided by the Board themselves throughout Fall, Winter and Spring Quarter. You will be expected to have a meeting every 2 to 3 weeks, but may have more or less depending on the order of upcoming events. During meetings, members will learn information necessary to organize, integrate and improve each clinic and social justice projects. © 2012 | BPSHI | BHAGAT PURAN SINGH HEALTH INITIATIVE Page 1 of 5 BPSHI | BHAGAT PURAN SINGH HEALTH INITIATIVE 2012-2013 Board Member Application Board Member Expected Duties and Responsibilities Before applying to be a BPSHI Board Member, you must understand that you are being given an amazing opportunity to not only gain leadership experience in both the healthcare and social justice fields, but that you are responsible for others’ experience as well.
