EMMASS – Project title: EGNSS Mass Market Application Supporting System Motivation & Basic Concept: “Galileo signals are inherently more accurate. The future for locations is based on accuracy, so Galileo is an answer.” Source: Data outputs and Galileo by Michele Bavaro The end of last year brings new milestone in GNSS technology. The Galileo implementation plan reaches initial operational capability with 18 satellites in orbit for fewer than 4 meters horizontal accuracy. What is more important, terrestrial supporting subsystems are working well and provide useful data for improving position accuracy and rapid TTFF. These functionalities shall be available not for Galileo driving devices only, but generally for any today smart mobile device equipped with GNSS chipset, internet and currently missing smart piece of software that shall bring Galileo functionality into existing devices/applications and also carries support for data authentication and commercial service, where available. The principal objective of EMMASS project is to provide enhancing features of Galileo, EGNOS and EDAS to applications using position services at present and future mobile devices via free GSL (Galileo Service Layer) software dedicated for devices powered by Android and iOS operating systems. Utilizing the data available on EGNOS and EDAS services can be achieved great service improvement even with non-Galileo receivers. Conceptual architecture: The main target groups EMMASS’s GSL will be: Users of mobile devices who need support their existing application with more accuracy position data with rapid TTFF especially at places with difficult signal conditions (such as urban canyons, forests, etc.) Nowadays application developers who plan utilize new Galileo functionality like data authentication and commercial services Application areas shall cover mobility as service, smart cities, IoT, commercial and social LBS. The principal outcome of the EMMASS project will be free GSL software that will enable: Seamless position provider(s) for existing mobile applications with better accuracy and rapid TTFF based on Galileo infrastructure capabilities Extended API with new Galileo features (authentication, payment services support and so on) for newly developed applications Position data recovered/accurate by fusion with other positioning techniques Support for power consumption optimization Upon successful completion, EMMASS will equip wide range of mobile devices users and programmers with a powerful tool to bring accuracy and rapid TTFF into existing devices and introduce new innovative Galileo features like authentication and payment services into future application.
