Summary
Pathology services underpin over 70% of all medical diagnoses and play
a critical role in both primary and secondary care. They are therefore a
crucial aspect of the Australian Government’s focus on improving
healthcare outcomes.
The Government ’ s costs for funding pathology services through the
Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) have increased in recent years, having
grown at an average annual rate of 7% between 2000/01 and 2006/07.
