Mole Rubric

MAKE-A-MOLE PROJECT
Objective: Your challenge is to make a mole for display in our classroom. A pattern will be provided for you. You are
essentially creating a stuffed toy to represent chemistry’s “mole”, an essential method of counting atomic-sized particles.
This project will count as much as a lab grade, so be sure to follow the criteria below.
Criteria:
1.
You must use the pattern provided. It allows for a narrow seam that can be sewn or glued.
2.
Choose your creature’s “skin” carefully. You can make your mole look ‘real’ (grey, fuzzy skin with a pink nose
and feet), or let your creativity and imagination shine through with some original selection. You must choose to
‘dress up’ your mole based on where it is found, how it is used or a play off it’s name.
3.
Fill your mole with a substance to get it to weigh one mole of that element. This mass is found on the Periodic
Table. The moles should be filled with cotton or some other type of material to fill it out then add anything else to
get the correct mass. You should show me the balance when you get the right mass as well as take a picture of it if
you can.
4.
Fill in the information below when you turn in your mole.
5.
Show me your creative, imaginative, and whimsical side. Impress me with your humor, and your intelligence
Look over the grading rubric below to see how your project will be assessed. NO PROJECTS WILL BE ACCEPTED
AFTER THE DUE DATE. If absent on the due date, it is expected that you turn it in the day you come back to school.
