REPLACING THE SPICE DETECTION HOLE PUNCH 1) 2) 3) 4) Place die assembly on work supports capable of supporting 3000 lbs (1360 Kg). Separate the upper and lower die assemblies. Invert the upper die assembly and place on supports with punch side up. Remove all splice detection hole punch parts from both upper and lower die assembly. 5) Remove the stripper plates from the upper and lower die assemblies and set aside. 6) Clean any foreign particles from both remaining die assemblies. 7) Examine the die shoe surfaces which support the splice detection hole punch components for damage and if necessary re-machine these surfaces, otherwise skip to step 10. 8) If machining of the die shoe surfaces was necessary, fabricate a shim from steel thick enough to match the thickness of the material removed. 9) Transfer the location of existing holes from the die shoe to the fabricated shims and drill them slightly oversized. 10) Install the components of splice detection hole punch to the lower die, using dowels and screws of the proper size. Tighten the fasteners in the lower hole punch components to 90 Ft/lbs (122N-m) as shown. 11) Place the splice detection hole punch with punch plate upon the upper die shoe with the small dowel pin farthest from the die centerline (toward yourself). 12) Place all screws in holes provided but leave them very loose. DO NOT install the dowel pins yet. 13) Now, invert the upper die assembly and place it back upon the lower die assembly (with both stripper plates removed). 14) While carefully lowering the upper die shoe, guide the splice detection hole punch into it’s lower mating component. 15) With the punch engaged, hold the punch away from the centerline of the die (toward yourself) and tighten the screws to 90 Ft/lbs (122N-m). This will place all the clearance on the side of the punch nearest the centerline of the die. This is as intended. 16) With a rigid drill press and 3/8 inch diameter drill, make entry through one of the dowel holes in the upper die shoe. Drill only to a maximum depth of 3mm into the die plate. 17) With an 11/32 inch diameter drill, and on the same location drill all the way through the punch plate. 18) With a 3/8 inch reamer, and on the same location line ream the hole in the punch plate which you just drilled. 19) Repeat steps 16 through 18 on for the other dowel hole. 20) Remove and invert the upper die assembly. 21) Place the supplied dowels into the corresponding holes which you line reamed leaving approximately ½ the length of each pin engaged in both the upper die shoe and the punch plate. 22) While placing the urethane stripper ring on the punch, align the hole in the urethane with the small dowel provided to provide proper rotation of the urethane. 23) Now replace the stripper plates, install the shoulder screws, and tighten them to 50 ft/lbs (68 N-m). Upper and lower stripper plates are NOT interchangeable. 24) Invert the upper die assembly and place it upon the lower die assembly. 25) Place die back in press.
