Choosing the
Correct Book Level
Is your child in grades 2-8?
If so, ask your child’s teacher about his/her ZPD.
Zone of Proximal
Development (ZPD)
ZPD = A reading level range for students.
ZPD example = 2.2-3.5
Knowing the ZPD can help children select
books that will help them
grow as readers
(without being frustrated).
Reading with Children
• Set aside a regular time for reading.
• Make reading an enjoyable, positive
experience.
• Maintain the flow.
o If your child mispronounces a word, allow
opportunity for self-correction
• Talk about and ask questions about what
your child has read.
Tips for Making
Reading Fun!
• Take turns reading: You read a page, your child
reads a page
• Change your voice to sound like characters in
the book!
• For struggling readers, try Echo Reading.
• Both Parent and Child: Guess what will happen
next and check to see who is correct!
