FAQ’s:
What is a choice board? It is an assignment that gives students a choice of activities to
complete.
Why use a choice board? Choice boards are used to provide students a way to express their
understanding using their strongest learning style. Not all students are writers, some prefer
to build models, create videos, etc.
The choice board below presents nine options. Students must complete a activities to earn
between 90 and 105 points. The manner in which this is done is the student’s choice.
Maximum point values are given excellent work. Exclusions are found beneath the choice
board.
Work with two students in
your science class to
complete and present the
WebQuest entitled
Classification Crisis.
40 points
Create a very detailed,
sparkly drawing of your
favorite zooplankton (1.5 by
2 feet). It should be
colorful, accurate, and on
the back you will report the
classifying characteristics.

Make 9 drawings of various
plankton using t-shirt
transfers, or fine-tipped
permanent markers. Each
square should be 3 dm by 3
dm. Work with Mrs. Baird to
design a plankton quilt, and
share your knowledge and
artistry with the class.

Delve into the lives of
“baby” Sea Urchins,
phytoplankton, and
zooplankton. Identify their
characteristics, life
expectancy, and
importance to the ocean
ecosystem.
Create a 6-sided object
showing their key
characteristics, food web,
and importance.
50 points
Create a persuasive power
point or Prezi. Implore us to
care for the oceans’
microorganisms. (Relate
your report to plankton,
algae, and other single
celled organisms) Discuss
characteristics,
dependence, & food webs.
Rubric will be provided.
60 points
Find an appropriate song,
and change the lyrics to
enable your classmates to
learn the characteristics of
members of Kingdom
Protista, and their
importance. Find a chorus
of classmates to sing it
while you record them!

Search the *Plankton
Portal.
Computer-generate a t-shirt
design (use t-shirt
transfers) for the slogan on
the site*. Include >5 images
of phyto- and zooplankton
on your t-shirt. Wear it to
tell the class why these
organisms are so important.

Create an intricate
sculpture showing the
detailed features of several
zooplankton. Use air-drying
clay, and paint your finished
creation. Present it to your
class while your share their
characteristics and
importance.

Read several articles on the
role of Kingdom Protista.
Create a bi-fold brochure
(typed) that informs others
about the challenges this
small but important group
faces, tells them how to
help, and provides web
references for more
information.
