PreAP & Academic Chemistry Summer Assignment I. Over the summer the following chemical elements need to be memorized. Only the name (correct spelling) and the chemical symbol listed below are required. It is recommended you make flash cards for each by cutting a 3” X 5” note st card in 1/2 and write the name on one side and the symbol on the other. There will be a Summer Assignment Quiz the 1 week of school next year. Elements 1-30 PLUS * Br2 , Kr, Ag. Sn, *I2, Ba, Au, Hg, Pb and U. * There are 7 Diatomic molecules that are found naturally or in their “elemental” state as a pair (twins). You need to label these 7 with the subscript 2: H2, N2, O2. F2, Cl2. Br2, I2 (HELP: to remember the 7…Start at 7 (on the periodic table) and make a 7…PLUS H2) Acetate II. Memorize Polyatomic Ions: (List to the right) Hydrogencarbonate orbicarbonate Nitrite Nitrate Cyanide Hydroxide Sulfite Sulfate Carbonate Chromate Dichromate Phosphite Phosphate Ammonium III. Algebra Solve for variables within a mathematical formula: Solve for x. 1) -8 + x = 2 2) 3x + 5 = 14 Solve for y. 3) 3x + 5y = 15 Solve for “m” D = m/V Know how to convert metric units (dimensional analysis): How many mg are there in 15 kg? Convert miles/hour to meters/second Know the values for metric units: Kilo = 1000 10 decigrams in 1 gram See attached metric list: Metric Prefixes Exa Peta Tera Giga Mega Kilo Hector Deka E P T G M k h da 18 10 15 10 12 10 9 10 6 10 3 10 2 10 1 10 deci centi milli micro nano pico femto atto -1 d c m µ n p f a 10 -2 10 -3 10 -6 10 -9 10 -12 10 -15 10 -18 10 Metric Prefix Puns 10 6 phones 10 -2 pedes 10 -6 phones 10 6 bucks 10 1 cards 10 -12 boos 10 9 los 10 -18 boys 10 12 bulls 2 X 10 with its 10 -1 mates 2 X 10 mockingbirds We look forward to getting to know you next year.
