Mau Carbon Kenya
The Enderit forest, part of the Mau Forest in Kenya,
covers an area of nearly 9000 hectares and is a
significant natural resource. The forest, however, has
been pushed hard and big parts of it have been overcut
and destroyed by corruption and mismanagement.
Deforestation has not only a local but also a global
negative impact on the climate as the trees and plants
absorb carbon dioxide and purifies the air. African
Wildlife Foundation is the initiator of a project that since
2010 is replanting trees and plants and is working to
preserve the remaining forest. The planting of the forest
generates jobs for the local population and is a great
entry into employment for the local youth. So far the
project has planted 375 000 trees and the plans are to
plant an additional 65 000 trees over an area of 75 ha.
In addition, the project also contributes to:
• Reduced erosion
• Increased biodiversity
• Ecosystem services

Carbon offsetting made it possible
Without the financial resources from carbon
offsetting, this project would not have happened.
The project shows that companies who takes
responsibility for their climate impact can support
sustainable development in developing countries.
That is important since it is where future emissions
are expected to be the biggest.
