POLICY FOR PERSONAL AND SOCIAL EDUCATION
As a Rights Respecting School, we promote the values and
principles of the UNCRC. This policy promotes and enables
children to access Article 29.
INTRODUCTION
Personal and Social Education (PSE) is central to the educational entitlement
of all children at Morriston Primary School and permeates all aspects of
school life. It has a cross-curricular dimension and is evident in the teaching of
all subjects within the Foundation Phase and National Curriculum. The
beginnings for the teaching of PSE begin in the Foundation Phase, where it
also pervades each of the Learning Outcomes. (Refer to curriculum policies
for full details.)
STATUTORY REQUIREMENTS
PSE is a statutory element within the basic curriculum for pupils aged 7-19.
As part of the core entitlement, Personal and Social Development, Wellbeing
and Cultural Diversity is delivered at Foundation Phase. It is the responsibility
of schools to provide a range of opportunities, plan and deliver broad,
balanced PSE provision to meet the specific needs of all learners.
AIMS
The aims of PSE are:
 To develop learners’ self esteem and a sense of personal responsibility.
 Promote self- respect, respect for others and celebrate diversity
 Equip learners to live safe, healthy lives
 Prepare learners for the choices and the opportunities of lifelong learning
 Empower learners to participate in their schools and communities as
active responsible citizens locally, nationally and globally
 Foster positive attitudes and behaviour towards the principles of
sustainable development and global citizenship
 Prepare learners for the challenges, choices and responsibilities of work
and adult life
(Personal and Social Education Framework – D.E.L.L.S. 2008).
WHAT IS PSE AT MORRISTON PRIMARY SCHOOL?
At Morriston Primary School, the well being of everyone is at the heart of the
school. We have a whole school ethos of inclusion, where everyone is
included and valued in everything. Everyone is encouraged to reach their full
potential and be an active citizen in the school community, by displaying care
for all and everything. Through the School and classroom rights, everyone is
encouraged to respect each other. We strive to provide an ethos that
encompasses our mission statement, our vision and our aims.

Within all subjects the teaching of numeracy and literacy is promoted. Using
the Literacy and Numeracy Framework (LNF) teachers are expected to plan
and deliver objectives pitched appropriately to the learners. Lessons have
success criteria which include numeracy and/or literacy objectives to ensure
the learners are aware of the particular skills they are looking to develop
within that lesson. Monitoring of books, lessons and listening to learners will
ensure all staff are planning effectively to ensure that “every child can be the
best they can be!”

THE DELIVERY OF PERONAL AND SOCIAL EDUCATION:
THE ETHOS AND ORGANISATION OF THE SCHOOL
All aspects of school life at Morriston Primary promote the personal and social
development of the children. This will be through discrete PSE lessons, crosscurricular areas of learning (Cornerstone Topics) and whole school. For
example, the opportunity to participate in decision making processes of the
school through involvement in the school council; taking responsibility for the
running of the ‘tuck shop’ at breaktime. Through all of these learning
experiences, the school is supporting each child to:
 Think and act for her/himself.
 Acquire personal qualities and values.
 Take her/his place in a wide range of roles in preparation for adult life.

Develop social skills.
Value and respect belongings/living things/environment.
Be able to share and co-operate.
CROSS-CURRICULAR LINKS
Parallel to National Curriculum subjects, cross-curricular themes are central to
the personal and social development of our children. The school works
through the Cornerstone Curriculum and where PSE is integral, this is
identified in the teachers’ planning. An example of this good practice is
evident through our contribution to ESDGC across the whole school.
PLANNING
In planning the curriculum, teachers at the school work within:
 A clear, consistent framework of skills supported and agreed by all.
 Supportive relationships between adult and child, child and other children
and adult to adult.
 A classroom climate which encourages all children to explore and
encourages a high level of interest.
 Opportunities for development outside the classroom situation through
responsibilities, extra curricular activities and educational visits.
TEACHING STRATEGIES
At Morriston Primary School the teaching strategies we adopt are those which
encourage:




Pupils to take increasing responsibility for organising their learning.
The development of a stimulating yet supportive environment.
Pupils to develop inter-personal skills.
Pupils to develop key skills across the curriculum and to practise those
skills.
 Pupils to explore attitudes, values, feelings and emotions, both of self and
others.
These are addressed through such methodologies as:
 Rights Respecting Schools
 Class and School Charters
 Restorative Practice

At Morriston Primary School, we seek to develop opportunities for parents, the
community and outside agencies to contribute to personal and social
development through their active involvement in the life of the school.

This is achieved through, for example, visits from parents who can share their
expertise; visits from P.C. Norris – School Liaison P.C. School Nurse,
Childline, Show Racism the Red Card, Food Standards Agency and visits to
local supermarkets, such as Tesco (Farm to Fork initiative).
RECOGNISING LEARNER ACHIEVEMENT
At Morriston Primary School, we assess, record and report learner progress
through Foundation Phase Profile (Incerts), marking of work (see Marking
Policy), observation, and children’s evaluations of cross-curricular and PSE
specific tasks.
Records of Achievement provide a means of recognising the personal and
social development of each child, both in and out of school. Some of the
children’s achievements are displayed prominently.
MONITORING AND EVALUATION
Monitoring of PSE is carried out through auditing of curriculum delivery and
teachers’ planning. Consultation with staff and other stakeholders helps to
clarify needs such as resources and staff training. Observation of lessons, by
the PSE Co-ordinator and SMT, will offer guidance and support to staff. CPD
opportunities are developed in line with the school development plan. The
PSE Co-ordinator will disseminate relevant, up-to-date information on school,
local and national priorities. Sharing of good practice is highlighted in staff
meetings.
