Amphi Tech Theatre Job Overview A Stagehand is a person who helps ‘run’ the show behind the scenes. During a show, this could mean: o Moving sets on stage o Performing quick costume and prop changes o Operating the curtain Outside of a show, a stagehand’s responsibilities include: o Knowledge of the prop and costume inventory o Knowledge of knots & rigging techniques o Setting the stage with curtains and marking positions on the stage o Assisting lighting technicians with the stage electrics Working towards becoming a stagehand gives you the following privileges: o Apprentice Stagehands are trusted to operate the electrics and are given their own personal rope to use outside of the theatre & practice their skills o Working Stagehands are permitted to use the Comm system before and during shows and can work basic shows in the theatre o Master Stagehands can work behind the scenes during advanced shows and can be considered for the role of Stage Manager in future shows A Builder is a person who constructs the sets for a show and builds structures that could help improve the shop or theatre. To assist with a show, this could mean: o Building the platforms and flats necessary for the show o Painting scenery and knowing proper painting techniques o Creating scale diagrams for sets & scenery that will eventually be built Within the shop, a builder’s responsibilities include: o Knowing how to use all of the tools in the shop, including the power tools o Demonstrating proper safety precautions and using tools effectively and accurately o Contributing ideas & projects to help with the upkeep & organization of the shop space o Using design programs such as AutoCAD and Google Sketchup to create digital designs Working towards becoming a builder gives you the following privileges: o Apprentice Builders are trusted to operate the Jigsaws and Power Sanders o Worker Builders are trusted to operate the Circular Saw with supervision o Master Builders are trusted to operate the Chop / Mitre saw with supervision Amphi Tech Theatre Job Overview A Lighting Designer is a person in charge of creating and managing the lighting for a show. During a show, this could mean: o Operating the Light Board o Operating the Spotlight Before a show, a Lighting Designer’s responsibilities include: o Hanging and focusing lights on the catwalk and on the electrics, including installing Gels and Gobos for necessary lights o Establishing Cues on the Light Board to make the show’s operations smooth o Knowledge of the current lighting setup in the form of a light plot o Knowledge of basic color theory to create a specific mood on the stage o Knowledge of basic lighting theory to make sure all areas of the stage are properly lit Working towards becoming a Lighting Designer gives you the following privileges: o Apprentice Lighting Designers are allowed up on the catwalk o Working Lighting Designers are trusted to hang, gel, and focus lights for upcoming shows o Master Lighting Designers are trusted to work the Light Board during shows A Sound Designer is a person in charge of creating and managing the sound for a show. During a show, this could mean: o Operating the Sound Board, including adjusting the levels and gain to compensate for feedback o Operating the Mac computer to play sound cues Before a show, a Sound Designer’s responsibilities include: o Setting up the microphones and speakers on stage for a show o Using audio programs such as QLab and Audacity to edit and adjust audio for a show o Knowledge of how to adjust the levels and gain on a sound board to create an optimal sound o Knowledge of how the theatre routes sound from the microphone inputs, through the sound tower, and back out to the speakers Working towards becoming a Sound Designer gives you the following priviliges: o Apprentice Sound Designers are trusted with an account on the Mac computer that will be used with the QLab and Audacity programs o Working Sound Designers are trusted to set up the microphones & speakers for shows o Master Sound Designers are trusted to work the sound board during shows
