Preserve and Maintain
Wilton Center Trees
Managing the street trees in Wilton Center is
integral to achieving the Center’s targeted
look and feel – an area that is visually
appealing, that demonstrates community
pride, and that is a desirable shopping
destination.
These street trees, which we often take for
granted, are a community asset that needs
proactive stewardship.
To respond to this need, the Town of Wilton’s
Conservation Commission & Tree Warden,
the Wilton Garden Club, and the Chamber of
Commerce, recently developed the Wilton
Center Tree Plan, a partnership to protect and
maintain Center trees. The Tree Plan
envisions a voluntary proactive tree
management strategy for the Center, with
private property owners, the Town, and
residents working together. The Plan
evaluates Wilton Center’s existing trees,
proposes new trees, and recommends an
organizational structure to manage this asset.
Equally as important, the Tree Plan sets up a
mechanism for residents, local businesses,
and others to donate commemorative trees in
support of the Plan. Trees may be purchased
to commemorate a special event, such as a
birth or birthday, graduation, wedding, or any
special occasion, or as a memorial. Two types
of trees are available for donations: shade
trees, such as sugar maples, red maples, and
white oaks, for $500 each; and smaller
flowering trees, such as shadblow, and
flowering dogwood, for $300 each. The cost
includes purchase of the tree itself, planting
and contributes to ongoing maintenance.
A list of trees available for donation can be
found on the back of this brochure.
Contributions will also be accepted for
ongoing tree care. If you want to join in this
effort, please complete the attached form and
return it to Wilton’s Environmental Affairs
Department.
As the Tree Plan is implemented, a Tree
Committee will be established to provide
unified oversight of the Town’s tree efforts.
There will also be opportunities for volunteers
to participate in tree maintenance, outreach
and education, and children’s activities. For
more information, please contact 203-5630180.
