In Tune with you – in hospital,
in the community, in your home
This leaflet has been written to help you
understand the voucher scheme, funded by the
Government as a permanent part of the NHS
wheelchair service.
You have two choices with
the voucher scheme:-
Q: What is the voucher scheme?
You can pay the additional cost above the value
of the voucher for the wheelchair, selected from
an authorised supplier.
A: Anyone who has a long term disability and
who is eligible for a wheelchair provided by the
NHS can apply to this scheme to access a wider
choice of equipment.
Q: How does the voucher scheme
work?
A: Mobility needs will be assessed and an
appropriate wheelchair will be prescribed.
However, if a different chair is preferred a
voucher can be issued to the value of the
prescribed chair. You will then be required to
pay the balance. The wheelchair service will also
need to be sure that the chosen wheelchair
meets your prescribed mobility needs.
1. Partnership Option
The wheelchair service will own the chair and
be responsible for its maintenance and repair.
2. Independent Option
You can pay the additional cost above the
value of the voucher to the authorised supplier
for the wheelchair selected. This voucher will
include an amount for the chair’s repair and
maintenance. You will own the chair and be
solely responsible for its upkeep.
Q: Who can apply for a voucher?
A: Anyone who lives in the Castle Point,
Rayleigh, Rochford and Southend areas.
Q: What will the voucher look like?
A: The voucher will be in the form of a
specification report from the wheelchair service
to an authorised supplier, specifying the type
of wheelchair required. The authorised supplier
will be reimbursed by the wheelchair service to
the value of the voucher.
Q: How do I apply for a voucher?
A: New referrals must be made by a GP or
healthcare professional.
Existing wheelchair users can apply by
contacting the wheelchair service directly.
Each person referred or reviewed for a
wheelchair will be assessed by the wheelchair
team, who may need to obtain information
from your GP. An appropriate wheelchair and
accessories will be prescribed. However, if you
request a higher specification chair you may
apply for a voucher towards the purchase of a
chair of your choice.
Q: How long before I can reapply for a
voucher?
A: A voucher will be issued for five years. If at
any time you feel your clinical condition has
changed or the chair is no longer suitable for
your needs, you can ask to be reviewed and
reassessed. Each case will be considered on an
individual basis and a further voucher may be
issued before the five years has expired.
