What is a Memory Box?

Holocaust Memory Box Project
Due March 29, 2017
Worth 50 points
What is a Memory Box?
A memory box (or keepsake box) can mean different things to different people, but,
essentially, it is a place to store your special keepsakes.
Most of us are in the habit of keeping memories. They might be photographs, special letters
we’ve received or mementos of places we’ve visited. No matter what we keep, these items
are all something special to treasure and help us remember moments in time.
Task:
Create a memory box that holds at least five significant items that represent important
moments or memories of a character of your choice from your independent reading book.
You must create an actual box of items to share with your classmates. On the lid of the box,
write a brief description of the book. Drawings, clay sculptures, or actual items may be put
in the box.
Requirements:

Choose at least 5 items your character might use daily, have kept as a
keepsake, or represent that person. You may use photographs of the items if
you cannot find them easily.

Find a quotation from the text that would justify your item. The passages can
either be spoken by your character or another character in the book. Attach
the quotations in some fashion to each item – using a tag, string, staple,
paperclip, etc.

Place the items in a container of some sort – a shoebox, gift box, etc. - that
has been decorated in a manner representative of a theme of the novel.

Write a short summary of your book (include the title and author of your
book) for the top of the box. This is where you explain what items your chose
to include and why. How do these items represent your character?

Be prepared to share your work with your classmates on the due date.

Item Selection:
The items were selected to show information about the

items complement each other to show different
perspectives and events throughout the entire novel.
10
Knowledge and Text Evidence:
After looking at/reading about the different items the
student has created, anyone would learn more about and
become interested in the novel or historical text. One
quotation is included with each item to show how it
relates to the text.
10
Appearance:
The items are presented to authentically look like the
type of things they are. For example, a letter is in a letter
format; a greeting card is decorated and looks like a
card.
10

The student presents the projects clearly and effectively
to the class. He or she explains the genres to the class
and gets the audience interested in the project and novel
or historical text.
10

accompanying the memory box that explains why these
