Research and Education
3rd Quarter Report
July 1 – October 30, 2015
Alison Armstrong, Associate Director
1. Advance transformative teaching and learning by engaging with OSU faculty and support units to
integrate library resources and services throughout the educational continuum.
Digital Tools
This quarter LibGuides debuted for OSUL. New LibGuides were created and training was successful.
The LibGuides training team (Deidra Herring, chair, Gene Springs and Diana Ramey) successfully
completed all initial and follow-up training for LibGuides including Carmen Library Links for the Health
Sciences Library and regional campuses.
Exemplars:

Train the trainers: Jennifer Schnabel worked with ENGL 1110 First Year Writing Program
(FYWP) courses and demonstrated a LibGuide to GTAs. Feedback via LibChat on 9/21: “I just
wanted to compliment you on a fabulous resource for first-year writing. The FYWP guide
seems like the reference every teacher dreams of.” She also created one for ENGL 2367
courses that can be used by instructors alleviating the need for her to conduct an instruction
section.

Ensuring a library presence for unclaimed courses: Beth Black created two LibGuides:
ARTSSCI 2120 and the general course page for use when there are no others to deliver.

As a means of engaging with a new department: Jennifer Schnabel contacted the Linguistics
department to gather feedback on the guide's creation. It led to a request for an instruction
session.

Course guides: Jessica Page developed custom course LibGuides in collaboration with
teaching faculty for three courses: ENR 2100 (Introduction to Environmental Science); ENR
2367 (Communicating Environmental and Natural Resources Information); and ENR 4890H
(Honors Colloquium). Gene Springs created several new course-specific web guides for
instruction he led this quarter.
“Choosing and Using Sources: A Guide to Academic Research” was submitted for publication in the OSU
digital bookstore. Cheryl Lowry, Robyn Ness, and Karen Diaz received reviews and feedback from Craig
Gibson and Chris Manion (WAC) and completed final editing. The final edition is forthcoming.
Work continued on the iDesign Toolkit, a faculty development resource for redesigning assignments and
courses to include information literacy learning outcomes. Brian Leaf and Craig Gibson are collaborating
on this project.
Karen Diaz and Diana Ramey are participating in the Canvas pilot as a potential new Learning
Management System for the campus. They have each served on working committees and are piloting
one section of ARTSSCI 2120 in it this fall.
2
Karen Diaz and Amy Pickenpaugh demonstrated Top Hat, the new campus enterprise software for
classroom polling and testing at the R&E Division meeting.
Beth Black, Karen Diaz, Robyn Ness, and Amy Pickenpaugh completed and rolled out the third and final
component of OutLoud, the online library assignment for Survey courses. The third component
addresses the issue of keeping track of and organizing campus information in an individualized and
meaningful way.
Innovative Teaching
Danny Dotson and Josh Sadvari were contacted by a team of instructional designers with ODEE to assist
with the creation of teaching modules in Google Earth’s Tour Builder to be integrated into the online
offering of Geog 2750 – Introduction to Regional Geography (Prof. Ola Ahlqvist). T&L will be working
with this team throughout the remainder of the Autumn semester.
In collaboration with a faculty member from the Department of Veterinary Preventive Medicine, Jessica
Page developed a new information literacy module for Veterinary Preventive Medicine 1: Introduction
to Epidemiology and Population Systems, a required course for first-year students in the veterinary
professional program. This involved developing an online lecture module and quiz on searching the
catalog, research databases, and internet for sources on a topic in veterinary epidemiology that
integrated into the Study Design unit of the course.
Sarah Falls formed new relationships with a number of faculty members from across all constituency
departments to create innovative instruction sessions that included Building Type Research and
Analysis for Interior Design, Arts Funding Research for Arts Administration/Education and formed a
panel on alternate career in the arts of four library employees with arts education backgrounds.
David Lincove continued to teach a section of students in the Glenn College Washington Academic
Internship Program using Carmen Connect. Amy Pickenpaugh assisted him, ensuring a good connection
with the group in D.C.
David Lincove and Caitlin McGurk worked with a History professor, Bruno Cabanes, to highlight both
database and cartoon resources related to World War I for a class he is teaching on that topic.
Gene Springs began discussions with Pat West, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs, and
Teaching and Learning to create online research skill modules for Honors Contract students at Fisher.
Beth Black is leading the integration of librarians, library instruction, and library services & resources
into the Second-year Transformational Experience Program (STEP). She is also serving a second year as
a STEP mentor.
Summer workshops and orientation sessions
As part of the 2015 Ohio Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation (LSAMP) Conference
3
Leta Hendricks led “Droppin' Science: Introduction to Library Research,” focusing on African American
Astrophysicists and Black Hole Astronomy. Beth Black taught two distinct student sessions: Join the
Research Conversation (with URO) and Follow the Spark of your Curiosity.
Beth Black delivered a Pecha Kucha for Residence Life RAs, focusing on the variety of ways in which
OSUL can assist students and she battled the stereotype of “library” as a simple repository of materials.
She was one of only 3 speakers for an audience of 350 RA's. Nick Wilkenson helped develop the content.
Meris Mandernach taught two course development institutes for UCAT to highlight library support to
instructors re-envisioning their classes.
Beth Black coordinated Family Lounge in Thompson Library for New Student Orientation.
Young Scholars (ODI) Senior Institute (July 6-10) used Thompson Library as works space; peer mentors
who were trained by Beth Black and Cyndi Preston in June supported students in successfully using the
library. Several library faculty members were invited to join the faculty/young scholar mixer mid-week.
Beth Black participated for the first time in the Honors & Scholars resource fair for 2nd year students.
Beth Black served as library contact and taught information literacy session for Humanities Cognitive
Sciences Institute, a program for high school students interested in humanities and cognitive sciences.
Semester Workshops
A one-day “GIS for the Rest of Us” training workshop was held in Thompson Library on July 31 that
provided faculty, staff, and students with information about using GIS tools in their research and
teaching. After the event, Josh Sadvari received multiple follow-ups from attendees at this workshop,
including an invitation to visit a Comparative Studies class (Prof. Isaac Weiner) in November to host a
training session so that students in that class can integrate Esri Story Maps into their final projects.
Architecture Library staff offered drop-in sessions for searching the Avery Index to Architectural
Periodicals. The Knowlton survey class instructor offered extra credit to any student who attended the
session, resulting in a unique method to help promote our Avery sessions and create awareness of the
library.
First Year Success Series (FYSS)

Several librarians participated in the teaching of 3 workshops designed by Beth Black for this
series: Cyndi Preston, Natalie Kupferberg, Jan Wagner, Leila Ben-Nasr, Karen Diaz, Beth Black,
and Pat Wood (Marion).

Thompson reference students attended 4 FYS sessions (A+ series) and promoted MARS and
reference/research help from peers. Roughly 120 “Survival Kits,” branded with OSUL logos,
were distributed at these classes.
4
Beth Black hosted the Service-Learning Collaborative coffee hour in Thompson Library; they had a
larger than expected turnout (reported in Reach but can’t find now) for our discussion of how the
Libraries supports instructors and the value of integrating information literacy into Service-Learning
classes.
Cheryl Lowry coached and supervised our student assistant, Lindsay Milich, for the Student-to-Student
Program as she developed and has begun delivering presentations to FYS, STEP, Honors and Scholars
students, and to Raney Hall dorm students this Fall. As of September 30, she has delivered 3
presentations to Honors and Scholars students; 2 presentations to FYS and STEP students; 1
presentation at a dorm.
2. Provide library experiences and opportunities that inspire creativity, discovery, innovation and
collaboration in support of University-level initiatives.
Pilot Program
Teaching and Learning Committee proposed and Exec approved a new Undergraduate Library Research
Fellowship that will be marketed in fall and offered next summer. Beth Black and Karen Diaz worked
with Helene Cweren (URO) to plan implementation and Beth Black and Eric Johnson are currently
working on the recruitment and support of potential faculty mentors.
Collaboration
Jennifer Schnabel co-hosted Q & A segment of A Conversation with William T. Vollmann event on 9/15.
Jennifer Schnabel, Sarah Falls, and David Lincove served on the faculty advisory board of the Billy
Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum.
As curator and co-advisor to a doctoral research apprentice, Deidra Herring and doctoral student Susan
Strayer finished working together in the Highlights for Children archives to identify key research
elements that make substantial connections to the 2016 gallery exhibition.
In collaboration with the Center for Urban and Regional Analysis (CURA) and the Byrd Polar Climate
Research Center (BPCRC), a “GIS for the Rest of Us” workshop was held in Thompson Library on July 31.
Josh Sadvari is working with Nena Couch to create an Esri Story Map Tour application that will highlight
content associated with the OSUL Carnival exhibit that is set to begin in January.
Danny Dotson worked with 3 faculty members on Textbook Affordability Grant applications.
Danny Dotson planned and placed a display related to Mercury Venus, Earth, the Moon, and Mars in the
Geology Library. The display includes globes, a selection of print books and maps, and information
about other books/ebooks on these planets.
Tina Franks collaborated with Nena Couch on a display related to Theatre Architecture in Thompson
Library.
5
Sarah Falls worked with library colleagues to organize and run three sessions called the Digital
Humanities Reading Group, an informal group of librarians who wish to talk about the impact of DH on
library faculty and staff. Additionally, a humanities focused e-mail list has been organized.
Sarah Falls worked with exhibition and programming organizers for the William T. Vollman exhibit, and
introduced the panel at the event “Vollman and Visual Art.”
Gretchen Atkinson worked with Justin Luna from Special Collections/Exhibits to create a display at 18th
Avenue promoting the 15th International Association Répertoire International d’Iconographie Musicale
Conference of Music Iconography, hosted by OSU Libraries November 8-10, 2015.
Jarod Ogier and Alan Green developed and launched a WordPress blog site for the Music/Dance
Library. The first significant posting was in promotion of our new subscription to Met Opera on
Demand, which was met with great enthusiasm by our students and faculty. They plan to shift their
“new resources” promotion (new books, scores, recordings, databases, etc.) to the blog site, as well as
promoting new exhibits.
The diversity committee installed the following Thompson Library Displays: Black Music Appreciation
Month- B.B. King; National Hispanic Heritage Month-Frida Kahlo; Hip Hop History Month-Dr. Dre.
Meris Mandernach and Emily Shaw curated a showcase on the second floor of Thompson Library that
highlights the printing technique of Letterpress. Materials highlighted in the exhibit were drawn from
the Theatre Research Institute, Rare Books and Manuscripts, and the Logan Elm Press.

3.
Offer enhanced and innovative research services to faculty and graduate students.
Research Commons Updates
Research Commons construction is underway and is currently proceeding slightly ahead of
schedule. Throughout the construction process, Josh Sadvari, Meris Mandernach, Alison Armstrong,
and Lisa Patton-Glinski have been heavily involved in weekly progress meetings and in finalizing
information related to furniture, technology, and the electrical and security infrastructure for the space.

Josh Sadvari coordinated the Autumn semester events schedule, including eight workshops and
two panel discussions. As of the beginning of October, we have had three workshops with 120
total attendees.
8

Amanda Rinehart promoted the DMPTool through a hands-on workshop. Elizabeth Wickes, a
Data Curation Specialist with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign requested workshop
notes and instructional materials. To date, OSU has 213 users and 176 plans in the DMPTool.

Josh Sadvari took over as the convener for the ORCID implementation team, which will conduct
a pilot project in three departments beginning in the Spring semester. Information about ORCID
was disseminated at the OSUL September faculty meeting and this year’s Research Expo.
Information Fairs

David Lincove represented the library at the Glenn College MPA Information Fair, August 17.

Nick Wilkenson, Josh Sadvari and Meris Mandernach represented OSUL Research Services at
the URO open houses, Student Involvement Fair, International Student Information fairs, and
the Research Expo.
Research Services worked with Library Communications to pilot a button giveaway from the reference
desk. From the initial 8 designs, four will be selected for a marketing campaign during late Fall/ early
Spring semester.
Meris Mandernach and Josh Sadvari met with Data Analytics major staff to brainstorm ideas for a
DataFest competition in the spring. While the event won't be co-sponsored by the libraries, several
programs leading up to the event will be held in the Research Commons.
Meris Mandernach met with the OSU Foundation to discuss the database Foundation Search. At this
time, seats will be available through the OSU Foundation, Corporate Relations, and the Office of
Research rather than University Libraries.
4. Increase the scale and scope of distinctive and digital collections and enhance access to and usage
of these materials to support research and anytime, anywhere learning.
Jessica Page purchased the newly-available electronic backfile of Veterinary Clinics of North America Small Animal Practice, one of the most scanned titles for document delivery.
Access to MetOpera on Demand, a new streaming video and audio service of the Metropolitan Opera
has been licensed and is now available for our students and faculty.
5. Increase the effectiveness of local print collection management and act to provide access to the
full range of emerging “collective collections” regionally and nationally.
With the help of Dracine Hodges, Danny Dotson acquired a set of copper engravings from the U.S.
Geological Survey. These copper plates were used in the early 20th century to produce geologic maps.
The plates are currently located in Preservation & Reformatting. Once preservation/conservation issues
are addressed, Eric Johnson (Rare Books) and Danny will meet with the faculty member that requested
the items to plan for displays and other uses for the items.
9
6. Engage with partners across the University to increase the amount, value, and impact of OSU
produced digital content.
Danny Dotson assisted a staff member in Mathematics who is working on a web page providing
information and links for theses/dissertations completed in the Department
(https://math.osu.edu/research/phd-dissertations) to help with recruiting.
Sarah Falls met with colleagues from the Wexner Center for the Arts and contributed to the submission
of an NEH grant to preserve original video artworks created by the Film/Video Studio Program. If funds
are raised, and the project proceeds as planned, this will be one of the most comprehensive online
resources on the history of Video Art available.
Belinda Hurley worked with Maureen Walsh and Terry Miller (Chemistry) to investigate hosting
supplementary data from the Journal of Molecular Spectroscopy in Knowledge Bank. The supplementary
data is currently hosted by OSUL (http://library.osu.edu/projects/msa/jmsa_hp.htm). [NOTE: This has
been a long-standing commitment that goes back to the 1990s. Belinda is trying to nudge the partners
toward a solution that makes more sense now.]
Josh Sadvari worked with Tamar Chute and Michelle Drobik to create an Esri Story Map Journal
application that combines the information from the Archives 50th Anniversary brochure with a map
showing the location on OSU’s campus (http://goo.gl/5XPaeD).
7. Develop a talent management program that highlights improvement, innovation, diversity and
accountability.
Diversity
The diversity & inclusion committee has identified speakers the 2015-2016 Tuesdays @ Thompson
program.

Tuesday, November 17, 2015 - Hispanic Heritage Month: Women and Knowledge in
Mesoamerican: From East L.A. to Anahuac, Paloma Martinez-Cruz

Tuesday, January 26, 2016 - Human Trafficking Awareness Month. Survivor's Ink, Jennifer

Talent Management
Jennifer Schnabel served on the Electronic Resources Librarian search committee.
Karen Diaz served on the Health Sciences Library Research and Education Librarian search committee.
Josh Sadvari and Meris Mandernach worked with OSU HR to hire the Research Commons Program
Assistant position. A verbal offer was accepted and the anticipated start date for this position is
early/mid-November.
Sarah Falls attended the 21st Century Skills Institute for mid-career librarians and the Digital Humanities
in July, 2015. She will meet virtually and monthly with a cohort focusing on issues of pedagogy in DH for
the next year.
Gene Springs served as onboarding colleague for two new Mary P. Key Diversity Residents.
Cheryl Lowry and Diana Ramey started up the SAT Program of non-credit courses, including iSkills, for
student assistants beginning Fall Semester in the Reference, Circulation, Micro Forms, T&L, and Book
Stacks departments. Numbers will be included in Quarter 4 report.
A Digital Humanities Study Group was held in Thompson Library this quarter. Topics included What is
Digital Humanities? How are Libraries involved? and What tools are needed to support DH research?
Each session of the DH study group had between 10-20 attendees. The group decided to hold two more
events during Autumn semester: the first in October will focus on DH projects the library has been
involved with from around campus. The second in December will focus on specific tools that individuals
can promote to users. More information about the study group is available
here:https://library.osu.edu/blogs/dhstudygroup/
The Reference team in Research Services started a student run reference & information blog.
https://library.osu.edu/blogs/askafriend/. The blog is authored by students who work at the reference
desk and the intended audience is other students. This project is intended to facilitate more peer-topeer learning.
Strengthening Our Culture of Assessment
Sarah Murphy, with assistance from Nichole Collier, Collections Analyst responded to a request for
proposals for the State Library of Ohio's Data Management and Analytics LSTA funding program. If
funded, the project "Developing Data Visualization Skills for Ohio's Workforce By Training Library
Personnel to Both Teach and Use Tableau, An Analytics and Data-Visualization Software" will prepare
Ohio library personnel to not only incorporate visual data analytics into their everyday practice, but also
to teach their communities to craft and communicate compelling data stories using Tableau.
Sarah Murphy led a two-part Tableau webinar training series for CIC Assessment Librarians with Ebony
Magnus, User Experience Librarian, Michigan State University Libraries and Jen-Chien-Yu, Coordinator of
11
Assessment at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. These sessions were recorded and over 25
CIC librarians and staff participated.
8. Meet evolving user needs by engaging in a strategic review of facilities, along with the
development and execution of a facilities master plan.
Several projects at the Geology Library have been completed to improve the appearance and make
better use of space. The ceiling was repaired with breathable paint to prevent future flaking, low-use AV
materials were transferred to make room for other purposes.
At the Architecture Library, a wall monitor was installed in the new group study room to offer
technology for ARC users. Access to the library catalog and internet via a secured iPad/iPad stand is now
available on the Mezzanine level which addressed the previous lack of computer access on that
level. Soft furniture and floor outlets were also added to accommodate the uses of library space.
Due to the advertising of the Fine Arts Library in 18th Avenue and increased instruction with general
education students from the Department of Arts, gate counts are way up at Fine Arts.
At the Biological Sciences/Pharmacy Library, evening hours were extended to 11:00 PM MondayThursday to provide study space for south-campus residents.
The Reference area in Thompson Library renovation was completed. The space now boasts an assembly
area, easier positioning of self-serve handouts, two narrow desks for reference transactions, and a
relocated ready reference area.
9. Build a robust, reliable, secure technical infrastructure for the Libraries including both human and
technology resources.
Robyn Ness worked with Michelle Gerry to complete a usability study of the document registry. Jennifer
Schnabel and Karen Diaz participated in usability testing of the Libraries’ current Document Registry
(conducted by Web Governance Committee.)
Widescreen monitors were installed in the Thompson Library Map Room to allow improved viewing of
maps and a 4-way split option.
