RESEARCH SUPERIOR RECREATIONAL PRODUCTS
Initial research included personal visits to playgrounds of schools for
children with disabilities. This provided first hand experience into what
challenges they face on the playground, be it social or physical. Additionally, informative research helped us understand statistics regarding those
on the Autism Spectrum.

Playgrounds are meant to be inclusive of all children, regardless of what their physical capabilities may
be. However, most play structures are inherently non-inclusive to those with physical impairments - especially to those in wheelchairs.
In an attempt to include wheelchair-bound children in all types of playground equipment, I present Adagio for Wheels. It is wheelchair ramp that plays a musical tune as the child rolls down it, adjusting pitch
with the speed of the chair.
In maintaining inclusiveness, Adagio for Wheels provides the option to include a “musical wall” on its
sides. This makes it an all-inclusive option, allowing children to run along side and make music with their
hands.

The most inclusive option would be incorporating a wheelchair ramp into a play structure. The Stacking
Stones concept evolves the musical wheelchair ramp into one of the most inclusive pieces on the playground.
A play structure designed around a wheelchair ramp allows a wheelchair-bound child to play on the
same level as everyone else on the playground. Additionally, the levels are stacked in a way to leave an
open-space interior on the ground level. This provides a cool, safe place for children who may become
overwhelmed by the activity on the playground and offers shade on hot days.
