File Note Date 29 June 2011 Project No SB19526 Subject Cycling participation data - reanalysis of inner 10 km 1. Participation There is little difference between cycling participation over the previous 7 days by residents of the inner 10 km, capital city and state (Figure 1.1). Only in Brisbane is there a statistically significant difference between cycling participation over the past 7 days among residents of the inner 10 km and other residents; 13.5% of residents in the inner 10 km rode in the previous week compared with 17.4% of all Brisbane residents. There is no clear trend among cycling participation rates over longer periods across the three states. However, it appears that the proportion that has cycled at least once in the past year is somewhat greater among residents of the inner 10 km in each of the states. Purpose of travel In all three cities the proportion of riders who travelled for transport purposes was greater among residents of the inner 10 km of the capital cities than the wider metropolitan area and across all residents of the state (Figure 2.1). For example, in Melbourne around 65% of those who had ridden in the previous week and who were residents of the inner 10 km had ridden for transport. Across Melbourne as a whole 45% had ridden for transport and across Victoria 38% had ridden for transport. In other words, the motivation for riding among those living in the inner 10 km of the capital cities was more likely to be transport than those in outer urban and regional areas (for whom the primary motivation was leisure and recreation). NSW Queensland Rider demographics The gender split (that is, the male:female ratio) of riders is an indication of how representative the riding subpopulation is of the wider population. Females are unrepresented among riders, particularly in areas with low cycling rates. In all areas females make a minority of riders (Figure 3.1). While the differences are not statistically significant there would appear to be a correlation between cycling participation rates and the gender split. The trends differ across the cities, specifically: In Victoria the level of cycling participation by adults does not differ markedly across regions, although the cycling participation rate for children is significantly higher in outer metropolitan and regional areas. In NSW the adult cycling participation rate appears greatest in the inner metropolitan area and regional areas, while childhood participation is greatest outside the metropolitan area. In Queensland children in the inner metropolitan area are much less likely to cycle than those in outer metropolitan and rural areas, while the adult cycling participation rate is marginally higher in the inner area.
