Moving on a Path to Success Dan Giras stands proudly knowing his work accomplishments. Dan Giras is an individual who came to Southeast Works in May of 2009. He began his vocational training on a part-time basis with the Pre-Vocational program. Shortly after, he made the decision to be a member of the Southeast Works janitorial services department while still enrolled in the Pre-Vocational program. Soon after Dan joined the Pathways to Success Program within the agency. During this time he focused on improving his work skills and quality of work. Dan was determined to strive for greater work independence. Over time Dan improved his work skills and met his valued outcomes, and decided to leave the Pre-Vocational program and focus more on improving his skills with the janitorial services department. Here he was able to learn all aspects of the janitorial field. He quickly made friends with many employees at the various cleaning sites that Southeast Works serves. Dan came to work each day with a positive attitude along with many suggestions on potential future cleaning sites that Southeast Works could serve. This past spring Dan made the next step to greater work independence; he became employed at the Alden Community Center near his home. Dan is performing janitorial services 3 days a week at this facility. He really enjoys his new job and is very well liked by his new co-workers in Alden. CONGRATULATIONS DAN!!! Passionate & Dedicated Staff It is the passionate and dedicated employees like Tony, that make Southeast Works who we are! Starting with a new agency can sometimes be an intimidating experience, so when Mary learned she was beginning a new program at Southeast Works and was going to be using our transportation, she was a bit nervous. To put her more at ease, Tony Schepis, a Southeast Works driver took the time to visit her house the day before to introduce himself as her driver. He also let her explore the bus to help her become more comfortable with this whole new experience. Tony Schepis, one of our remarkable employees here at Southeast Works. Recognition for Taking Charge When Kelli noticed one of her co-workers at Smokey Bones looked ill, she took charge, notified her supervisor, and immediately called 911. The woman was later taken to the hospital. It was due to Kelli’s calmness, and attentiveness that a potentially life threatening situation was averted. Congratulations Kelli! 2 181 LINCOLN STREET | DEPEW, NY 14043 | 716 683-7100 | fax 716 683-7086 | www.southeast-works.org Kelli being acknowledged at Smokey Bones for helping her coworker. News from Our Departments Connections Day Hab Program On April 1st, our Connections Day Program began offering the choice of Pre Vocational services to our individuals in order to prepare a pathway to community employment. We are now a program that does both Pre-Voc as well as Day Hab activities each day. This change has given our participants the opportunity to learn about and do actual work in the Pre-Voc segment, as well as continue enjoying the community-based learning that the Day Hab program has provided for years. The Connections Day Program participants have been presented with many different activities related to Pre-Voc and work skills in the community. From discussions about work skills and appropriate work behavior to time management activities, our participants are learning all about what it means to be an efficient and productive worker. There have also been opportunities to put the skills they are learning about to use. Our groups have done volunteer work at the Morlock Foundation and the Buffalo Science Museum, and have also had the opportunity to do traditional Pre-Voc jobs like hangers. In the afternoon, the Day Hab portion of the day begins. Some of the activities we have participated in recently have been cooking classes, walleye fishing, swimming and of course everyone’s favorite, bowling! Now that the weather is warming up we are all really looking forward to going for nature walks and getting out in the community more. Focus on Fun With the help of our Residential Managers and staff, our individuals get together several times a month to participate in different group activities such as cook off ’s, Bingo, sports games, etc. The recent highlight was a dance here in our Southeast Works gym. There was lots of food, drinks and of course wonderful music Community Habilitation Community Habilitation has a summer full of activities planned to continue with their mission to bring people together who live independently in the community as well as at home with their parents/caregivers. Some outings include going out to dinner, bowling, mini golf, the zoo and much more. The crew also maintains our recycling program. They learned new techniques such as pottery and glass work and created beautiful new works of art. Both Southeast Works and UB’s artists will be featured in an upcoming art exhibit at the Center for the Arts, with the concept of “Artist First, Disability Second”. No mention will be given to who the disabled artist is vs. the non disabled artist. Will you be able to tell? A two week showing will run from August 1st until August 18th. Their goal was to design something that would allow our individuals to become more productive in the work they do here. Professor Howard Payne’s students had a chance to visit our work center to see the variety of jobs our individuals do, including working on one of our largest contracts, Quality Park Envelopes. To complete this particular job, our individuals sort, count out and stuff a certain quantity of envelopes into a plastic bag to be sold at local stores. The students noticed the amount of time it took as well as the accuracy needed to make sure the proper amount of envelopes were in each bag and decided to create something that would count envelopes for us, thus speeding up our production time! The device they designed allows us to place envelopes into a slot that counts and signals our individuals when the required number have been fed into the machine. The students loved the project because it offered them real life, hands on experience and our individuals couldn’t be more thrilled with the new machine! Therap In June our agency hosted a Therap User Group session which consisted of Therap users from other agencies in the area. Therap is the main information database for individuals enrolled in programs at our agency. It was a big honor to be chosen by Therap to be a host, and it was a great opportunity to show firsthand what a strong program we have developed. If you would like to know more about Therap or have any questions please contact Lori Sojka at 716-683-7100 ext. 253, or e-mail [email protected]. Southeast Works Café From Seed to Plate In the spirit of Earth Day, the individuals in our Southeast Works Café are learning a new skill: growing their own vegetables and herbs! 6 Budget Cuts On the News! In March, five of our individuals attended a press conference regarding the restoration of funds to the OPWDD budget. While there, they had the opportunity to meet Dennis Gabryszak and ask him questions about the cuts, and even got featured on WIVB Channel 4 news! 181 LINCOLN STREET | DEPEW, NY 14043 | 716 683-7100 | fax 716 683-7086 | www.southeast-works.org Giving Back During the month of December, thanks to the generosity of several Connections Day Hab families and participants, we were able to raise enough funds to purchase Christmas gifts for the Morlock Foundation Children and donate wreaths to homebound senior citizens in Cheektowaga. Everyone enjoyed shopping for toys and games for children in unfortunate circumstances, while the senior citizens were touched to be visited and to receive their gifts. Developmental Disabilities Awareness Day On Thursday, May 23rd 2013, the 25th annual Developmental Disabilities Awareness Day was held at the Conference & Event Center in Niagara Falls, NY. Professionals from several area agencies that specialize in providing services and opportunities for people with developmental disabilities were at the convention to provide guidance, literature and general information about services that each organization provides. Once again, several members of Southeast Works attended and actively participated in the event. Twenty-one workshops were held throughout the course of the day, providing a great opportunity to meet people from neighboring Western New York agencies and to learn more about health, recreational and habilitation services for developmentally disabled individuals. DD Day Logo Contest Winner – Steven Easley Every year the DD Day Committee hold, a logo contest for all of the DDAWNY member agencies. Individuals submit their artwork for a chance to have it incorporated into souvenirs, tee shirts, bags, programs and much more. After lots of submissions by many talented artists, Southeast Works’ own Steven Easley WON! When asked about his feelings on having a day such as DD Day that raises awareness of others’ disabilities, Steven said, “It makes me feel happy.” Congratulations Steven! Congratulations Steven!
