Spotlight on the Norovirus The Norovirus is the most common winter stomach bug in the UK. It is highly contagious and is transmitted by contact with contaminated surfaces, an infected person, or consumption of contaminated food or water. The symptoms are a sudden onset of nausea followed by vomiting and diarrhoea. Most people will make a full recovery in one to two days. It is especially important for children and the elderly to keep hydrated. Good hand hygiene is important to stop the spread of the virus. Alcohol gels do not kill the virus, wash hands thoroughly. Please remind staff and parents that anyone affected should not attend nursery until they have been symptom free for 48 hours. If your setting is affected with cases of norovirus, then useful guidance on control and cleaning procedures is available at: https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/32294 3/Guidance_for_managing_norovirus_outbreaks_in_healthcare_settings.pdf Public Health England operates a free education resource called e-Bug (http://www.ebug.eu/) which aims to help children and young people understand infections and antibiotic use. It is available in 22 languages. You can find out more at https://publichealthmatters.blog.gov.uk/2016/02/08/e-bug-educating-young-peopleon-microbes-and-antimicrobial-resistance/ Oral Health News Last year we highlighted to you the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition’s recommendations on sugar. Consumption of free sugars is a risk factor both for dental caries and obesity. The average intake of free sugars should not exceed 5% of total dietary energy intake. This means no more than: 0g 19 g (5 tsp) 24 g (6 tsp) 30 g (7 ½ tsp) 0 – 3 year olds 4 - 6 year olds 7 - 10 year olds 11 years+ and adults NB Babies and very young children do not need and should not have any free sugars. The Oral Health Team has made many visual resources around hidden sugars in foods aimed at children, drinks and breakfast cereals. If you would like more of these resources for your health promotion displays, please email: [email protected] 2 Focus this year is on promoting supervised tooth brushing in early years settings. Regular daily tooth brushing with a family strength fluoride toothpaste is highly effective in preventing dental decay. The Oral Health Team has been busy trying to secure funding to support a dry brushing project. They are starting this scheme in areas of highest tooth decay rates and then will roll out to other areas. Place the sweet potato cubes in a microwavable bowl with 1 tablespoon water and cover with cling film. Stab holes in the cling film then microwave on high power for 6 minutes until tender. Drain away the water and leave the sweet potato to cool. 2. Meanwhile, mash the kidney beans in a large bowl, then add the cooked sweet potato and mash a little more to combine. Add the finely chopped spring onions, coriander, tomato puree, smoked paprika, lime juice and chilli flakes and mix well. 3. Using your hands, divide the mixture into 4 even-sized portions, roll between your palms, then press down to make burger shapes about 1.5cm thick. Don’t make them too thin or they will break when cooking. 4. Bake in the oven at 180 C for 20 minutes or until crispy. 5. Serve in a wrap with a crisp salad with some lemon juice squeezed over. 5 The Golden Apple Team If you require further information on the Golden Apple scheme or would like to know when your next assessment is due please contact: Golden Apple Officer, Zoe Fogarty, 3 Knowsley Place, Duke Street, Bury, BL9 0EJ Tel: 0161 253 6743 Email: [email protected] Nutritionist, Francesca Vale, Lifestyle Service, Radcliffe Library (First Floor), Stand Lane, Radcliffe, Manchester, M26 1WR Tel: 0161 253 7518 Email: [email protected] Senior Environmental Health Officer, Margaret Waddington, 3 Knowsley Place, Duke Street, Bury, BL9 0EJ Tel: 0161 253 5523 Email: [email protected] Oral Health Promotion Officer, Alison Tabois, Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust, Nutrition and Dietetic Service, Blenheim House, Little 66, Roach Bank Road, Hollins Brook, Bury, BL9 8RN.
