Welcome to
Issue 18 of
Barangaroo
South News.
It is incredible to
think that we are
half way through
2015 already and what a great year
it is shaping up to be for the
project. We have come a long way
since October 2011 when major
construction commenced on site.
In August, we will welcome our
first commercial anchor tenants,
Westpac Group, into Tower Two.
See our lead story for further
details about this momentous
accomplishment.
Although Tower Two will be
progressively occupied by its first
tenants, Barangaroo South will
continue to be an active
construction site. Page 2 provides
information about the phased
opening of the precinct and how
the site is gradually coming into its
own as a new and vibrant part of
our beautiful city. We will keep you
updated as we open more areas of
the precinct over the next 12
months and page 4 details some
of the latest retail offerings that
will be coming to Barangaroo later
this year.
Take a look at page 3 for a social
legacy initiative which I am
particularly passionate about; the
Discover Barangaroo online
learning portal. Created
specifically for the NSW
Geography Syllabus and Australian
Geography Curriculum, the
educational resource offers more
than 60,000 students each year
the opportunity to explore and
learn about Barangaroo

THE FIRST COMMERCIAL TENANTS
SET TO MOVE INTO TOWER TWO
August will mark an exciting
milestone for the Barangaroo
South project as we welcome the
first commercial tenants, Westpac
Group, to the precinct.
Westpac Group staff will be
progressively moving into Tower Two
which is the centre commercial tower
and part of International Towers
Sydney. This tower is Australia’s most
sustainable office building and was
awarded the Green Building Council of
Australia’s prestigious 6 star green star
(v3) rating in office design. Workers will
enjoy large connected flexible floor
plates, 100% fresh air, maximised
daylight and fantastic harbour views to
enhance health and wellbeing and to
improve productivity.
Lendlease and its subcontractors have
worked over two million construction
hours to ensure the safe and timely
delivery of the 42 storey tower. Since
construction commenced in October
2011, approximately 60,000m3 of
concrete has been poured, 8,600
tonnes of reinforcement steel tied,
100,000m2 of formwork constructed
and over 6,000 glass façade panels
installed. The tower structure was
officially completed earlier this year
with the NSW Premier the Hon. Mike
Baird MP celebrating the ancient
Scandinavian tree ritual of ‘topping out’
with over 100 guests on the roof of the
building.
The team has worked closely with
Westpac Group to deliver a world class
internal fit out for their new offices. The
majority of floors are connected via
internal staircases and have communal
hubs to promote collaboration. The
working floors are made up of open
plan activity based working stations,
where staff are able to select a desk or
workspace depending on the work
they are undertaking.
Taking up approximately 70% of the
building, staff from Westpac Group
will continue to move into Tower Two
over the coming months.
The next buildings to open at
Barangaroo South later in 2015 will be
the two waterfront residential
apartment buildings, Anadara and
Alexander, with the remaining two
commercial towers of International
Towers Sydney following in 2016.

Although the site is progressively
opening, the majority of Barangaroo
South will remain an active
construction site as we continue to
construct the remaining towers and
other buildings around the precinct.
Chris Blanchard, Construction
Manager for the public domain works
said “we are creating a vibrant new
precinct at a human scale by
constructing lanes, waterfront walks
and greening the area through world
class landscaping. We want people to
enjoy walking around the area and
engaging with Barangaroo, even while
construction is continuing around the

NAPOLEON BRIDGE - CONNECTING THE PRECINCT
A new pedestrian footbridge, one of
the many initiatives to improve the
connection points into Barangaroo
will open in July. Napoleon Bridge
will be used by workers, residents and
visitors and links Napoleon Street and
the city into the precinct.
Designed by UK architects, Wilkinson
Eyre, the bridge is an elegant structure,
comprising mostly of glass and steel.
The footbridge is five metres wide and
spans approximately 30 metres across
Hickson Road. It is expected that, at
peak, approximately 112 people each
minute will use the bridge to access
Barangaroo.
Wilkinson Eyre has a global bridge
portfolio and has designed more than
25 iconic bridges around the world such
as the Gateshead Millennium Bridge in
England. The UK firm was also selected
as the winner of the International
Design Competition for Crown’s
Integrated Hotel Resort at Barangaroo
South.
Due to the size of the bridge, the
structure was assembled off site and
transported via the Western Distributor
on a 54 metre long vehicle. Napoleon
Bridge was lifted into place by a 350
tonne mobile crane in April. As the
bridge is located over a public road and
not within the Barangaroo South site
boundary, works to complete the
bridge needed to be carefully
coordinated with the relevant roads
authorities and other construction
occurring in the area.
Transport for NSW is currently working
on further connection points for
commuters and visitors to access
Barangaroo. Wynyard Walk, which will
allow pedestrians to be able to safely
walk in six minutes to and from the
upgraded Wynyard Station will be in
operation in 2016. Furthermore,
construction will soon start on two ferry
wharves, allowing greater connectivity
via the harbour which are due for
completion next year. For more
information on these initiatives, visit:

STUDENTS DISCOVER BARANGAROO WITH
INNOVATIVE LEARNING PORTAL
Discover Barangaroo, a new online
educational resource which will reach
up to 60,000 students each year, was
officially launched this month.
Created by Barangaroo South’s
Community Development Team, the
Discover Barangaroo learning portal is
an interactive website which provides
an in-depth look at one of the largest
and most significant urban regeneration
projects anywhere in the world. The
educational resource provides a live
case study for Geography students in
Years 7 to 12, allowing them to explore
Australia’s first large scale carbon
neutral precinct without actually leaving
the classroom.
The launch event was hosted by
Barangaroo South’s Managing Director,
Andrew Wilson and featured guest
speaker Dr. Grant Kleeman from
Macquarie University, who worked
closely with the Lendlease team to tailor
the portal content to the NSW
Geography Syllabus and Australian
Geography Curriculum.
the actual construction site. Susan
Caldis, Head of the NSW Geography
Teachers Association and Head
Teacher, HSIE, for Castle Hill High
School said that Discover Barangaroo is
a “brilliant example of the way that
learning is progressing with the use of
technology.”
Alisa Hitchcock, Community
Development Manager for Barangaroo
South said, “Discover Barangaroo is
making the urban transformation
underway at Barangaroo accessible for
all students, including those in remote
Australian communities and even
internationally. Once the last cubic
metre of concrete is poured and the
final building is opened, Discover
Barangaroo is a social legacy which will
embed Barangaroo in to the Australian
curriculum for years to come.”

Event guests try out Discover Barangaroo
on interactive touch screens
Representatives from the media, The
NSW Department of Education and
Communities, The Board of Studies,
Teaching and Educational Standards
NSW, and Geography teachers came
together to learn more about the firstof-its-kind resource and trial it on large
interactive screens.
Discover Barangaroo is the culmination
of 18 months of careful planning and
testing. The unique case study is live so
the content can constantly be updated
as the project progresses, keeping it
fresh and relevant for teachers and
students alike. It is not only proving to
be a popular resource in Australia, but
also internationally with students
logging on and taking a ‘virtual
excursion’ from Asia, United Arab
Emirates, Europe, United States of
America and Canada.
Alisa Hitchcock with Dr. Grant Kleeman, Susan Caldis and Andrew Wilson
The resource includes a diverse range
of stimulus material which encourages
students to explore the content that is
relevant to their studies. This includes
worksheets, photographs, maps,
Computer Generated Images, animated
fly throughs, videos and a live webcam
– all hosted in an easily accessible online
environment.

SPECIALTY COFFEE SIGNIFIES
START OF RETAIL OFFERINGS
Barangaroo has welcomed its first
retailer to the precinct, Hall of
Fame coffee connoisseur Toby
Smith and his talented team from
Toby’s Estate.
The man behind the brand, Toby
Smith, has been serving his signature
brew since he first opened doors in
Sydney’s Woolloomooloo back in
2001.
His empire has since grown to four
signature cafes Australia wide: a
presence in New York, Singapore
and Manila, and is a leading stockist
to several hundred independent
cafes nationally.
The launch of his new Barangaroo
business has aligned with the arrival
of International Towers Sydney’s first
commercial tenant, Westpac Group,
to Tower Two.
The specialty coffee house is among
many bespoke eateries and cafes
primed to set up shop at
Barangaroo. A range of retail
offerings will come online later this
year including Georgie Boy’s Coffee
Co, Pasta Pantry, Silverbeet, Iron
Grill, Sushi Hon and Holy Basil. They
will form part of The Canteen, a new
age food court offer which will be
the focal point of the working
community.
Gary Horwitz, Head of Retail for
Lendlease said the opening of Toby’s
Estate marked an exciting milestone
in the precinct’s history.
“With up to 23,000 office workers,
1,500 residents and 33,000
visitors on-site each weekday, the
precinct will offer the right retail
mix to position Barangaroo as
one of the best places to work,
live and visit in Sydney.”
Toby’s Estate and The Canteen will
be located in Tower Two of
International Towers Sydney.

LUCY
SHARMAN
In this issue we profile Lucy Sharman
our Sustainability Education Manager
and Ecoconcierge.
How would you describe your role?
My role is to support the retail and
commercial tenants and residents to
help them make their businesses and
homes as sustainable as possible. That
could be anything from helping large
businesses to educate their staff about
how to separate waste properly, through
to sourcing more sustainable products
for a small business or home.
What excites you most about being
involved in creating Barangaroo
South?
I’m proud to be involved in a project that
is not just about buildings - Lendlease
has incredible environmental and social
targets. My role would not exist if
Lendlease wasn’t committed to creating
the best and most sustainable places.
What are the challenges you face in
your role?
There is only one of me so it is important
to keep an eye on the long game. I need
to concentrate on what I need to do to
leave a lasting positive legacy – not just
what is most urgent and in front of me
at the moment. There are lots of
challenges, but they are all exciting.
What is the best advice you have been
given in your career?
Do what you love. Keep learning and
exploring new things through your work
and it will stay fun and interesting.
What has been the most rewarding
part of the project to date?
Toby Smith of Toby’s Estate is looking forward to bringing
his high energy, fast paced team of baristas to Barangaroo

Probably one of the most rewarding
things has been visiting NSW farmers
that produce food organically and
ethically. We are looking at the
possibility of using their produce to
supply the precinct. At one farm they
not only produce great food, but also do
amazing work to support people that
have had really
big challenges
in their lives.
Gaining an
appreciation for
how much that
organisation
means to them
was a really
humbling
experience.
