Introduction
 Recap vocabulary from the previous lesson – what can students remember about Halloween, candy, ghosts, trick or treat, 31st October? (Chapters 4 – 6)
Use Teacher Resource 1 to refresh their memories. Ask the students to spell the words and invite them to write them on the board.
Course Book: Kid’s Box 3
Play Pictionary Teacher Resource 2.
Supporting Tasks

wish to do this as a class activity – ask the question and then students give the answer. Encourage them to spell out the words.
Teacher to then write answers on the board for students to copy.
1. Pictionary cards
 Read Chapters 4 and 5 of The Fairground Ghost. Students then complete Activity 2 - Sequencing. This is a sequencing activity

next? There are two options for this activity (2i which is taken directly from the book and 2ii which is in easier language). Differentiate
appropriately for your class. For 2i you may wish students to have access to the book.
Activity Sheets
 Read Chapter 6 to the students – did anyone guess the ending?
1. Spooky Quiz
Main Task
2. The Fairground Ghost –
 Students work with their parents to complete a ghost craft (for a big class, students will need to start this before parents arrive). Have

all materials for the craft ready to begin the activity. Variations on the ghost’s face can be used: bigger/smaller/sadder eyes/mouth.
3.
Ghost Template
Students and parents can present their ghosts to the class and the audience will then use the scare-o-meters from last week to indicate
(2 per student)
how scary the ghost is (cute ghosts are ok too!). Use Teacher Resource 4 and Activity Sheet 3 for the craft.
4. Word search
 Students can use the scare-o-meters from last week to indicate how scary the ghosts are (but cute ghosts are ok too).

Select words that have been covered in the previous lesson which can easily be described.
The teams take turns choosing a card from a bag. The student whose turn it is has to act out the
word for his/her team in a certain time (30/45 seconds); the team will be awarded 5 points for a
correct guess. The team with the most points is the winning team. This game will be better
monitored with just two groups and teacher acting as time keeper.

Answers to Activity Sheet 2i
The Fairground Ghost
( 1 ) On Friday, Jake saw a poster on his way to school. The Fair was in town.
( 2 ) Jake asked his mother to take him. “There are 70 great attractions!” Jake told her.
“And I’ve got 70 piles of washing to iron,” she said. “Why not ask your sister?”
( 3 ) Jake made a face. His sister Marcia spent the whole time on the phone. But he
had to find someone to go with. He went to ask Marcia.
( 4 ) Jake held his breath. He counted to ten. He counted to ten again. At last, Marcia
looked up. “OK, pest, she said. “We’ll take you.”
( 5 ) Jake soon found the ghost train and climbed aboard. With a lurch, the train began
to move into a tunnel.
( 6 ) Then the train went around the final bend and out popped a little ghost. But the
the little ghost wasn’t scary. The little ghost was the funniest thing Jake had
ever seen.
( 7 ) Jake was still laughing as he left the train. “What’s so funny?” asked a man with a
clipboard. “The little ghost!” gasped Jake. He hadn’t seen the man’s badge. He
didn’t know the man was a Ghost Inspector.
( 8 ) The Ghost Inspector held up his scare-o-meter. “Be as scary as you can”, he said to
the little ghost. The little ghost took a deep breath….and screamed. BLEUGHHHHH!
The arrow on the scare-o-meter quivered. Was the little ghost scary? The Ghost
Inspector checked. “Just as I thought!” he said. “Not scary at all.”
( 9 ) The little ghost started to glide sadly away. Jake ran after it. “Wait!” he shouted.
Don’t go.” He tried to catch hold of the little ghost. “Don’t be sad!” Jake said,
when he caught up with the ghost. “This is a fun fair. Why not stay and have some
fun?”
